Stolen or lost laptops accounted for roughly 1 in 5 incidents of footloose patient data reported to the federal government in 2011, according to a recent study by the accounting firm Kaufman Rossin. If that statistic is not enough to convince out-and-about physicians to lock their laptops in their car trunks, the federal government will get their attention with a regulatory hammer. Just ask a group practice affiliated with the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary (MEEI), a specialty hospital in Boston.

During these times of thinning margins, where many businesses' daily operations may be jeopardized by a month's delay in the receipt of reimbursement, the fierce backlash the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) received from nursing home owners and operators regarding prepayment policies implemented for the Zone Protection Integrity Contractors' (ZPIC) audits was no surprise.

Marketing
Medical Offices, Doctors, Dentists, and other professionals in the Medical Community are always on the lookout for new patients they can help that can also help build their business. With the intense competition in this industry, it is imperative to have a solid marketing plan in place to attract new clients (patients) and to keep them once you earn their business. Finance The use of technology has certainly changed the way physicians run their practices today. In the years past, medical offices had paper medical records. The patient was given a hand written prescription or the practice faxed the prescription to the pharmacy and the physicians communicated to other healthcare providers by writing letters and sending them via the US Postal Service. Wow how times have changed!

Core Measure 15 Not Only Protects the Patient, It Protects Your Bottom Line
Protecting PHI and complying with HIPAA is as much about protecting your medical practice as it is protecting the patient's confidentiality.
Until recently, the reality has been that most medical practices have focused on safeguarding their PFI primarily as the means of ensuring patient confidentiality with little focus on technical and operational safeguards that go beyond mitigating the risk of an accidental disclosure of PHI. Many practice administrators have reported that the single greatest concern for PHI has been the potential dissemination of one patient's records to another patient.

The Encryption Conundrum: Usability vs. Security One of the most deliberated new HIPAA regulations of the past few years is the Breach Notification Rule, which outlines the requirements by which providers must notify authorities, media, and affected individuals following the discovery of a security breach of patient's health information. The penalties are stiff.

Wearable Monitors May Overhaul Mobile Phone Architecture Wearable computing sensors could lead to an overhaul of mobile phone architecture, according to a July report by GigaOM Pro, the research arm of online tech publisher GigaOM. Jody Ranck, an analyst at GigaOM Pro and author of the report believes, "The phone is ripe for change; I suspect it will change even faster than my gut even thinks." This change will be due to the rapid developments in wearable monitors and devices, which Ranck believes will expand the function of the mobile phone.

Jokes of the Month
Best Patients for Surgery
Five surgeons from big cities are discussing who makes the best Patients to operate on.
The first surgeon, from New York, says, 'I like to see accountants on my operating table, because when you open them up, everything inside is numbered.'
The second, from Chicago, responds, 'Yeah, but you should try electricians! Everything inside them is color coded.'
The third surgeon, from Dallas, says, 'No, I really think librarians are the best, everything inside them is in alphabetical order.'
The fourth surgeon, from Los Angeles chimes in: 'You know, I like construction workers ... those guys always understand when you have a few parts left over.'
But the fifth surgeon, from Washington, DC shut them all up when he observed: 'You're all wrong! Politicians are the easiest to operate on. There's no gut, no heart, no balls, no brains and no spine, and the head and the ass are interchangeable!

permission to publish by http://www.jasonlove.com __________________________________________________________ Incredibly Dangerous Food A hospital's consulting dietician was giving a lecture to several community nurses. He said, "the crap that we put into our stomachs and consume should have killed most of us sitting here, years ago. Red meat is horrible. Fizzy drinks eat your stomach lining. Chinese food is loaded with MSG. Vegetables are now "iffy" because of fertilizers and pesticides ... and none of us seem to realize the long-term damage being done by the rotten bacteria in our drinking water. However, there is one food that is incredibly dangerous, and we all have, or will (likely), eat it at some time in our lives. Now, is anyone here able to tell me what food it is that causes the most grief and suffering for years after eating it?"
A 65-year-old nursing sister sitting in the front row raised her hand, stood up and said, "Wedding cake."
