Ball for Cancer

Two of the winning entrees of the Martin Luther King Jr. Poetry Contest

Martin was a king of justice
He fought for equality
He was wise beyond his years
Love he preached withdrawing tears
Because his message he was hated

But he fought on in truth
For that he won the Nobel Peace Prize
Its love we still hear him cry
Far and wide the shot rang around the world
The thought made us want to hurl

Martin the King we scream with a gleeful beam
He is our beacon of hope and love
Like a prize wrapped nice and snug
Martin's words are our daily hug

                                           Jeremiah Wright
                                            Grade 9

I Have a Dream, Do You?

People lying,people crying
some dying, others frying
until a man came with a dream.
He was really strong and lean.

He used his vision to stop violence
he gave his opponent a silence
he went forth with a truth
inspiring me and the youth.

I see anger, I see danger
he was their power ranger
he fought for justice, he stood for human rights
and he gave violence a fight.

To keep his dream alive
for brotherhood we all must strive
because when we all stand together
we're together forever and ever.

What needs to be done
is soon to come
if our youth took a stand
we can give non-violence a hand.

If we are brave and we are strong
together we'll sing a religious song
now boys and girls, if you have a dream
let's roar together, strong like a tidewater stream.

I have a dream. Do you?
Let's sing a beautiful jazz blues
Now go and sing
and give peace and love a loud ring.
