2012 will be a fruitful year for Mexic-Arte Museum. On Jan 27th, the Museum welcomes Diego Huerta and Daniela Gutierrez who have traveled throughout Mexico taking 31,000 photos of people who want to spread the message of peace with 31K Portraits for Peace.   Mexic-Arte Museum will proudly be the first museum to feature this ambitious project both in the gallery and on the outside 5th Street wall.

The Education Department under the new leadership of Alex Freeman who comes with a Masters of Art from the University of Texas and several years of experience as Education Curator at Artpace has initiated the innovative program Screen It!   This program will introduce 800 underserved youth to screen printing and careers in the art field. Additional plans include creating a computer and printing lab to expand the program through summer workshops and internships. Screen It! has attracted support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the City of Austin.

Mexic-Arte Museum is pleased to be participating in the its first American Association of Museum's Museum Assessment Program (MAP), a program designed to improve the operations of the museum. This spring the Museum will begin a second assessment focused on Collection Stewardship that will focus on management, policy and planning of the permanent collection. Both the Board of Directors and staff are working diligently to improve our institution.

Two new Board members begin their term this month.   Mary Ann Thompson-Frenk is an artist and philanthropist, and is the founder of the Memnosyne Foundation, The John Philip Thompson Foundation, and Thompson Fine Arts, Inc. Joshua Frenk is the Co-Founder and Vice President of the Memnosyne Foundation; he is also an accomplished film maker, writer, and philanthropist. Welcome!

We are also pleased to announce that the 2012 Gala del Museo will be held on May 6th at the Four Seasons Hotel. Save the Date! Join us at Mexic-Arte Museum for all these exciting programs!

31k Project's Urban Interventions

As an extension of the 31K Project, Diego Huerta has taken his images to the streets of the most violent cities in Mexico. In 2011, Diego installed 100 vinyl portraits with the phrase "la paz comienza creyendo" (peace starts by believing) in the streets of Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua and Matamoros and San Fernando, Tamaulipas. To recreate this urban and publically-interactive component, the Mexic-Arte Museum has placed a selection of portraits from the 31K Project on our 5th Street exterior wall in an effort to continue the 31K Project's promotion of peace.

Mexic-Arte Museum thanks Capital Metro and especially Aida Douglas, Juan Wah, Community Involvement Coordinator; and Kevin Perkins, Account Sales Executive for this generous community sponsorship valued at almost $10,000! Mexic-Arte Museum Selected to Participate in National Museum Assessment Program

Mexic-Arte Museum has been selected to participate in the Museum Assessment Program (MAP). Through guided self-study and on-site consultation with a museum professional, participation in MAP will empower Mexic-Arte Museum to better serve the citizens of Austin by facilitating its meeting and exceeding the highest professional standards of the museum field.

The program is funded by the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and throughout its 30 years has been administered by the American Association of Museums (AAM). As part of the IMLS National Leadership program, MAP advances best practices and fosters improvement in museums. MAP is a self-motivated program; application to and participation in MAP is initiated by each local institution, and those accepted invest considerable human and institutional resources into the assessment.

Mexic-Arte Museum will concentrate on the Organizational/Institutional Assessment which reviews all areas of a museum's operations. Upon completion of this assessment, Mexic-Arte Museum will be better prepared to operate as a 21st century museum with a strong understanding of core museum standards and good practices that support sustainability. This assessment places significant emphasis on strategic planning as well as ensuring operations and resources align with the museum's mission. The outcomes we hope to achieve include increasing staff and/or governing authority's knowledge about the respective roles and responsibilities of governing authority and staff, museum standards and best practices; improving alignment of operations to mission; and improving the museum's ability to refine the existing mission statement that will prepare our institution for the improvements of our facility.

"This is an incredible opportunity for Mexic-Arte Museum and MAP will help us to improve in many areas. Both the Board and Staff Members will have an active role in our assessment and are committed to improving the Museum and better serving the community"   stated President of the Board, Dr. John Hogg about the program.

"Choosing to be part of the MAP program is indicative of the commitment to civic involvement, public service and overall excellence on the part of Mexic-Arte Museum" said Ford W. Bell, President of AAM. "Studies have shown America's museums to be among the country's most trusted and valued institutions. MAP is designed to make them even better."

Since its creation in 1981, the MAP program has served over 4,200 museums and is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. MAP is supported through a cooperative agreement with IMLS. For more information, including a complete list of museums participating in MAP, please visit www.aam-us.org/map. AAM is the only organization representing the nation's entire museum community and has been dedicated to promoting excellence within the museum field for over 100 years. For more information about AAM, visit  www.aam-us.org.

New Staff added to Education Department and IMLS Program Starts

In 2012, Mexic-Arte Museum will serve over 1,000 students between the ages 10 to 17 through art outreach programming conducted at over a dozen schools in the greater Austin area. With generous funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the CYD Program funded through a Grant from the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services through the City of Austin, most of these students will participate in Screen It!, an innovative studio-based program that teaches introductory screen printing skills over the course of six to eight sessions during and after-school.

To address the increased need for Mexic-Arte Museum's services, the Museum's Education Department staff has undergone a transformation through the hiring of three new museum educators. The first phase occurred in September when the Museum hired Alex Freeman as Education Director. Freeman has proven art education and supervisory experience, having directed the education department at Artpace for the past two years. He oversees the Screen It! program and is a tireless advocate for arts education in our community.

Joining Freeman in January are two talented art educators with strong ties to art education within the Latino community. Gabriela Santiago comes to the Museum as Education Coordinator. A 2008 graduate from Texas State University with a degree in art education and focus in screen printing, Santiago has taught at Tafolla Middle School on San Antonio's West Side since 2010. There she developed a middle school survey course that integrated art history, fundamentals of design, and relevant real life application. Additionally, Santiago is founder and director of artist residency Transit: A Cooperative for Artists in Transition. She will promote and coordinate Screen It! outreach classes; develop curriculum and workshops; and schedule and conduct exhibition tours.

Gabriela Santiago

Rounding out the education team is Mark Aguilar, Jr. as Education Associate. Aguilar received his BA in Fine Arts in 2008 from Our Lady of the Lake University. He has had the opportunity to work with students of various ages teaching for the Southwest School of Art in their Mobile Arts Program and the Kids Initiating Designs and Solutions program. These programs reach out to lower income schools in various San Antonio school districts. In addition to those duties, Aguilar was an adjunct professor at Our Lady of the Lake University and a middle school screen printing instructor for San Antonio Youth Centers. With over 13 years of screen printing experience, Aguilar will be the Museum's lead outreach educator and provide artist educator training for Screen It! classes.

          Mark Aguilar

With this recent makeover, the Museum is poised to bolster its education mission to provide unique and innovative outreach programs that helped underserved youth in the community gain the knowledge, pride and skills needed to succeed in academics and their future endeavors. Mexic-Arte Museum to Celebrate 10 Years of Partnership with Totally Cool Totally Austin

Past Totally Cool Totally Art Exhibition at Mexic-Arte Museum

2012 will mark the tenth year of Mexic-Arte Museum's partnership with the City of Austin which is designed to encourage teenagers to create and learn from art features student-made artwork created in after-school workshops. The teenagers produce high-quality artwork in media such as photography, illustration, mixed media and video, which are then exhibited at Mexic-Arte Museum and celebrated with an annual opening reception. From February 14-28, 2012, Mexic-Arte Museum will display original artwork created from Totally Cool Totally Art's most recent after-school art programs. Totally Cool, Totally Art (TCTA) offers free community based arts education for teenagers who may not otherwise have such opportunities. TCTA promotes a philosophy centered on the benefits of arts education for teens and is much more than just an arts and crafts program. TCTA has taught media such as blacksmithing, computer animation, filmmaking, printmaking, installation, conceptual art, portraiture and urban painting. TCTA is funded by the Austin City Council's Social Fabric Initiative, an effort to deal with teen issues in the city. TCTA is an Austin Parks and Recreation Department program and a partnership between the Community Recreation Centers and the Dougherty Arts Center. Since October 1996, thousands of teens have taken part in this unique art experience with many repeating each year. During each program year, teens take visual arts classes twice a week at various community recreation centers. Please see Totally Cool Totally Art Website for more information: www.ci.austin.tx.us/tcta/
