HARVESTING PARTNERSHIPS

The Women's Business Council - Southwest (WBCS) is proud to support

Captain Hope's Kids at Harvesting Partnerships.

Captain Hope's Kids was founded in 1989 as The Hope Foundation for the Homeless.  Its original mission was to provide emergency grants to shelters for critical operating needs. During the 1990s, a disturbing trend emerged, mothers with babies and children became one of the fastest-growing segments of the homeless population. In addition, more babies were being born into homelessness. In response to this problem, the Hope Foundation's Board of Directors chose to focus its resources toward helping homeless children in North Texas.

How Can you help?

The Hope-in-a-Box program is a great opportunity for you to make a difference in the lives of these children by providing hygiene or summer fun items in personal boxes of hope.

WBCS recommends each member consider bringing a Hope-in-a-Box with them on the day of event so more local children can have something to look forward to.

General Guidelines:

  • All items must be placed in a shoebox or plastic container
  • Each box needs to be decorated in a way that allows the box to be opened while wrapped
  • Each box should be gender and age appropriate for the recipient
  • Example:  Boy or Girl 2-3 yr, 4-6 yr, 7-10 yr, 11-12 yr, & teens
  • Items for the box should total $10.00 or more.

Please do not include "Happy Meal" toys.

See examples of personal items for girls, boys and summer.

ALL ABOUT AUSTIN

The July Austin Council Connection luncheon was a big success, Ruth Verver from Paperclip Promotions shared her knowledge on the differences in marketing and selling, and when selling isn't enough

In her lively and entertaining presentation she talked about the four "P's" of selling - Passion, Purpose, Paradigms and Permission.  She gave some things to think about when considering how to keep your name in front of your customer, what's worked (and not worked) for other companies, and how to determine what works for you.

Also, Matt Pickens, Sr. Project Manager with the Beck Group, talked about their new goals for MWBE participation in their construction projects.  We appreciate Matt reaching out to us and will do our part to help him meet his needs in all areas of a project.

 August Austin Council Connection

The August 28 Austin Council Connection luncheon will feature Kristin Robertson with Brio Leadership

Kristin is a long time WBCS member and supporter, and we are excited to hear her discuss "The Inner Game of Highly Effective Leaders."  Kristin is an author of two books and many articles for both print and online media.  She's an executive coach, organizational change consultant and group facilitator who helps companies reduce operational costs, develop high potential employees, create productive teams and articulate their strategic goals.  Her knowledge and experience will offer everyone something to help them become better leaders.

Please join us at Chez Zee 5406 Balcones Dr. in Austin from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

We'll have time for networking, lunch and a great presentation.

TERRITORY NEWS

BNSF Sponsored WBCS Reception Recap

BNSF Railway sponsored a WBCS reception on August 1 at the Embassy Suites in Albuquerque. Attendees, made up of New Mexico WBCS WBEs, women business owners and Corporate (Sustaining) Members, enjoyed the event and the evening reception was a great forum for networking. Dale Granda, CEO of BFS Solutions presented on Committing to Change. Challenging the audience to embrace change, he stressed the importance of doing a check up from the neck up. Is the emotional side of your brain taking over for the rational side?

"If you don't have a plan to change, then don't expect success!" - Dale Granda

Leigh Ann Vernon, director of Strategic Sourcing & Supply for BNSF, shared with the audience the importance of major corporations doing business with a diverse supplier base. Sandia National Laboratories, a new Corporate (Sustaining) Member of the WBCS for 2012, was also in attendance.

"The event was outstanding and really pushed the idea of change and taking full advantage of those changes. Thanks to Mr. Dale Granda for presenting and BNSF for supporting the event. It also goes without saying that the WBC-Southwest is really geared to helping women's businesses see the future and do something about it before your competitor does." - Patricia Pantoja, CEO, AbleBelts.
