Sammy participated in a BE BODY POSITIVE workshop and this is what she has to say,

"Before I came in touch with The Body Positive's work, everything I had heard and experienced in the realm of body image work never truly hit home with me. I think the most profound difference between The Body Positive and other organizations is that it really does focus on the POSITIVE.  It sounds so simple, but it makes a strong impact. I have found that most advocates of changing idealistic beauty standards and promoting healthy body image for women tend to speak primarily about the negative pressures of the media, the negative toll weight-focused health programs takes on the psyche, and the negative parental pressures today's children face. While it is absolutely imperative that these issues are recognized and talked about, this focus on the what's wrong with the world does nothing to promote change. Here is what The Body Positive offers: the tools to create change in one's own life and in the lives of others. And furthermore, The Body Positive pieces together what all the separate organizations out there are aiming for by incorporating work on health, on mental health, and on community."

"Eating is one of the most fundamental human needs, and if we can learn how to have our own authority over that need, and conquer the messages that tell us we have to compromise our health and happiness in order to look a certain way, then we start to "know a lot more about what we know," as Elizabeth's [The Body Positive Co-Founder] young client puts it, and our worlds are opened up to endless possibilities."

"The Body Positive gave me permission to love and be loved in return, to pursue my goals and dreams, and to become a leader. This work extends into every aspect of one's life, not just health and self-image. There has truly never been an activity or event in my life that I can't somehow relate back to The Body Positive."

With love and gratitude,
Connie and Elizabeth

5th

International Conference of the Association for Size Diversity and Health (ASDAH)

This conference will examine the evidence that a weight-loss approach to promoting health is not only ineffective,

but also potentially damaging. Sessions will provide critical information for nurses, physicians, therapists,

dieticians, health educators, other health professionals, and lay persons, to better advocate for and achieve

successful health outcomes for their patients/clients, as well as in their own personal lives.

We are grateful for your donation of any size and hope for your continued support. Lives, like Sammy's, are dramatically changing due to The Body Positive's work, and we are eager to expand our reach so that more people will be able to strengthen their self-love and body esteem, becoming powerful role models and leaders of positive change in their communities, families, and on their school campuses.
