Greetings!

What a wonderful conference experience we had in Winnipeg!  We had just over 230 registrants and 70 of them were Canadians!  We discovered that Winnipeg truly is a singing city.  Each evening we were joined by 100 or more local folks who added tremendously to the singing. Several people who came the first evening enjoyed the festival so much, they came back each evening and brought friends along! Our deepest thanks to Marilyn Houser Hamm, Irma Fast Dueck, Dorcas Windsor, Lottie Enns-Braun, Chrystl Bartel and other Winnipeg folks who spread the word about our conference.  The Winnipeg Free Press had quite a lovely article about the conference with details about all the festivals.  Here's a link to the article.  News Article
Thanks also to John Ambrose, George Bell and others in the SOCHS chapter who made calls, sent emails, and really "got out the vote."  Great job, friends!

Check out photos and comments on The Hymn Society's Face Book page and watch for the set of conference photos on our own website soon.

Put July 14-18, 2013 on your calendar for our next conference in Richmond, VA!

Meanwhile, keep singing!!

Paul A. Richardson, FHS notifed us that Samford University has recently acquired a copy of David W. Andrews, The Pilgrim's Choice, A Selection of Hymns and Spiritual Songs, Lately Compiled from Various Authors: Designed for the Use of Conference Meeting [sic; no "s"], Private Circles and Congregations (Jacksonville, Ala.,: J. F. Grant, Printer, 1843).  He says that as far as he can determine, this is the first collection compiled and published in Alabama by a Baptist. He knows of

only two other copies of this work: one in the State of Alabama Archives and another that was sold to a private collector a year or so ago.

Rae Whitney was interviewed in the Scottsdale Star Herald when Queen Elizabeth celebrated her Jubilee.  Check out the article http://www.starherald.com

Congratulations to Lois Rosebrooks who was named Brooklyn AGO's Person of the Year. She doesn't play the organ, but loves church music and history.  Her two interests combined this past May, when she guided a group from the Brooklyn-AGO on a tour of Green-Wood Cemetery, visiting gravesites of several famous organists and hymn writers. To Lois's surprise, she was named Person of the Year at the chapter's annual meeting last month, an award which is bestowed "to thank and honor someone who is not an organist for the support he or she gives to our profession."

Kenneth Hull was recently honoured with an Award of Recognition from the Laurier Centre for Music in the Community for his contributions to 'enhance the quality and vitality of music in the community'.  The citation mentions his chairing of the Conductor Search Committee for the local orchestra, leadership in establishing a new East-West Festival, and direction of Spiritus Ensemble, which presents Bach Vespers services four times a year.  Congratulations to a multi-talented hymnologist!!

Continuing Hymn Contest

Macalester Plymouth United Church in St. Paul, Minnesota, announces the seventeenth annual international contest for English language hymn writers. It is our understanding that hymns can motivate the church to be more actively involved in social reform, a vital part of its ministry.  It carries a prize of $500 for the winning entry.  Our 2012 contest will be a search for hymns that address the scriptural call to speak out loudly and clearly against injustice, and to unite with others working for change. Entries must be postmarked by December 31, 2012.  Macalester Plymouth Hymn Contest details can be found at: www.macalesterplymouth.org or call (651) 698-8871
