What do you see as the current state of congregational song? What trends do you see emerging? What are your hopes and dreams for the future of congregational song? What are your concerns about the future of congregational song? How can an organization like the Hymn Society
best support the needs/trends/hopes/dreams voiced here today?

On April 13 the Massachusetts Council of Churches and Boston University School of Theology co-sponsored "United in Song: Celebrating 2012 Hymnic Anniversaries." The evening was divided among various activities:  munching on delicious refreshments, singing selected hymns and songs, and viewing 130 items from the BU STH hymnological collections related to the hymnic anniversaries.  (Among these treasures is a copy of the 1612 Ainsworth Psalter, one of four in US libraries.)  Carl P. Daw, Jr., FHS, provided a brief overview of the items on display, and Kevin R. Hackett, SSJE, led the singing.

 Recent Hymn Festivals

Don't forget to send us information about your hymn festivals.  We'd love to have a copy of the program and your script if you are willing to share it.  We often get calls asking how to create a festival and it's great to send out some examples.

 What are Your Favorite Hymns??

Edward Frazier, Jr. has been compiling lists of favorite hymns for 30 years!  He's asked different congregations and groups, mainly in the New England area and kept track of the changing responses.  He'd like to poll the Society members and friends, so take a few moments to print the attached one page form and fill it out. Survey form  Ed would like you to rank by number (1-10) your ten favorite hymns on the list.  If your favorite is not on the list, you can write it in.  Please mail the form to

 | Continuing Hymn Contest

Macalester Plymouth United Church in St. Paul, Minnesota, announces the seventeenth annual international contest for English language hymn writers. It is our understanding that hymns can motivate the church to be more actively involved in social reform, a vital part of its ministry.  It carries a prize of $500 for the winning entry.  Our 2012 contest will be a search for hymns that address the scriptural call to speak out loudly and clearly against injustice, and to unite with others working for change. Entries must be postmarked by December 31, 2012.  Macalester Plymouth Hymn Contest details can be found at: www.macalesterplymouth.org or call (651) 698-8871     |
