 Greetings!

We've reached a milestone!  The Verse is one year old! Thanks for all the positive responses throughout the year.  It's great to hear from you when an issue goes out and even more delightful when you send me something to add to the newsletter!

Though our work is never done (like dusting or cutting the grass) I'm encouraged to see how vital congregational song is in so many areas. Hymn festivals, seminars and workshops are being presented in many locations.  There have been articles about congregational song in recent journals-- some in surprising locations.  Shirley Erena Murray, alerted me to an excellent article by Brian McLaren.  It's a revision of a piece he wrote for songwriters earlier and worth another look:

Just now I'm attending the Calvin Symposium on Worship where I'm looking forward to learning more about the Re-tuned Hymns movement from Greg Scheer, Kevin Twit, Bruce Benedict and others. There are lots of Hymn Society members on the program there -- John Bell, Alice Parker, Yvette Lau, Larry Visser, Martin Tel and of course, Emily Brink--just to name a few.  You can be sure that I'll be talking about The Hymn Society with anyone who will listen!!

Meanwhile, keep singing!!

Our prayers are lifted for the family of Life Member, Tom Thatcher, who died January 21 in Shawano, MO.  Until his last years, Tom was present with us at many annual conferences. To read his obituary, click here.

Though not a Hymn Society member, Gerre Hancock made valuable contributions to congregational singing and was known and respected by many Society members. We mourn his passing on January 21 at age 78. Dr. Hancock was a renowned organist, teacher, and church musician.

 Hymnic Resources

Psalms for All Seasons, the new collection published by the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship, Faith Alive, and Brazos Press, is available in the Society's Book Service.  This volume contains multiple settings of each of the 150 psalms spanning a wide variety of musical styles.  Each psalm appears first in pointed chant setting followed by a variety of settings including responsorial, hymn paraphrases and song forms. The psalter will be featured in a Hymnal Showcase this summer in Winnipeg but you may not want to wait that long to get your own copy!  Congratulations to the compilers for this valuable resource.

The Hymn Society's First Tune Search

Earlier this month, a gentleman called the office to ask if I could verify whether John N. Burnham had ever been a Hymn Society member.  He was trying to compile information on this New York organist and had found the following short announcement in The Etude magazine for March 1924:
John N. Burnham, the blind composer and organist of New York, has been awarded the prize offered by the Hymn Society for the best setting of Rev. Harry Webb Farrington's "Harvard Prize Hymn," Our Christ.

I was able to determine that Mr Burnham had been a member in the 1940's but no further information was available in our records in Richmond.  Wondering if there might be some information about the hymn tune Mr. Burnham composed (VERITAS), I contacted Carl Daw who is maintaining our archival files in Boston.  Carl's search of the minutes of early Society meetings uncovered a wealth of information for the gentleman who contacted us, but I thought you'd enjoy knowing a few facts:  the discussion of the Harvard Prize Hymn and the ensuing search for a new tune was a matter of discussion at every Hymn Society meeting over a period of two years--starting with the Society's 3rd meeting in February 1922.  Over 1000 tunes were submitted!  In addition to the winning tune, the Society voted to keep on file 25 additional tunes with the copyright maintained by the composers.  (We were already gathering resources!)  The Society also voted not to grant permission to use Mr. Burnham's tune unless it was to be paired with Farrington's text, "Our Christ."

Just thought you'd enjoy this little glimpse into our early days --  You never know what adventure will begin when you answer the phone and say, "The Hymn Society!"
