MAVERICK BULLHORN Parent Newsletter
MARCH 2011 |

Our Winter sports are behind us and now we prepare for Spring sports. I would like to say "thank you" to all the parents of our students who continue to provide time and talents. Without your contributions, it would certainly be difficult to provide all of the wonderful opportunities available to MSHS students.
Prom is coming fast. I am excited to have prom held at MSHS and the after prom at the YMCA. I know our students will have a fantastic evening. Please plan to attend, April 9th, our 'Opening Night.' We plan to have bleachers at MSHS for parents and students. As students arrive, there will be valet parking, and students will be introduced as they walk the red carpet. We would love to have you with us.
By now, I'm sure you have heard that I have accepted a position at the USD 266 Educational Support Center. I am honored to be asked to serve in this new role. Mr. Dave Hickerson has been named the new Principal of Maize South High School. You are fortunate to have him take over the reins.
We are currently giving Kansas State Assessments and are hopeful our students will do well. We also continue to work with struggling students and believe that failure is truly not an option for any of our students. Our students can't afford to fail, and we can't afford to let them. Your support and continued emphasis on academics is appreciated.
A continued "thank you" for being a part of the Maverick Family. |

New MSHS Principal Named for Next School Year
MHS Associate Principal Dave Hickerson will take over the reins next school year as MSHS Principal. Hickerson has been with the district for five years as an associate/assistant principal at MHS. Prior to coming to Maize, Hickerson was an Assistant Principal and Athletic Director at Valley Center High School. He has over 25 years of educational experience as a teacher, coach, athletic director and administrator. Hickerson earned his Master's degree from Baker University in School Leadership and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Secondary Education from Wichita State University.
"I am excited to make the move to MSHS," said Hickerson. "I want to keep the positive momentum going for the Mavericks. I am very impressed with the school spirit and pride that I see in the staff, students and parents. It is a great atmosphere, and I am anxious to become part of the Maize South family."
Current MSHS principal, Shelia Rathbun, has accepted the K-12 Director of Education position at the Maize USD 266 Educational Support Center beginning this summer. She will oversee curriculum and assessments for the district. |
Driver Education
USD 266 Maize offers driver education all year round. The driver education programs strive to prepare students to become knowledgeable about and respectful of the law, to learn basic driving skills, and to develop a responsible attitude toward driving. The instructors will provide critical experience to students, involve parents in the process, and foster cooperative interaction with others in the driving environment. More detailed information on driver education can be found on the high school Web site under the counselor's corner.

Effective March 1, all USD 266 transcript requests will be processed electronically through the USD 266 website. If you need a transcript for any purpose, please go to www.usd266.com. Under the Quick Links/Frequently Requested Forms you will find Transcript Request. This will direct you to a directions page and the link to the Secure Transcript Request website, Docufide. You will need to register with Docufide before you can place your request. I would like to encourage all seniors to register this week so they will be ready to go every time they need to request a transcript.

Yearbooks
Buy a Yearbook!
It's not too late to order a yearbook! Order by May 1, and pay $40 only. After May 1, the cost of the yearbook increases to $45. You can order your yearbook by bringing in a check for $40 (payable to Maize South High School) to E110 or by following the link on the Maize South High School website, located at the BOTTOM of the page. Books will be delivered to students at the beginning of the 2011-2012 school year.

Mavericks also have a special opportunity this year to personalize four pages of their yearbooks. Students can upload pictures and design pages at Yearbook Yourself. It's free to register, and the cost of adding the pages is $15. The pages will be sewn into the individual student's book, making that student's yearbook even MORE special. Pages must be designed and pictures uploaded by April.
If you have questions about how to order a yearbook or personalize pages, please contact Shelly Walston at swalston@usd266.com. |

Greetings from the Counseling Office
It's hard to believe another month has passed, and we are already looking towards Spring Break! This has already been a busy month with the enrollment process for the 2011-2012 school year. All enrollments should be completed, and now we will begin the process of building the master schedule based on our students' enrollment requests.
Below is information regarding upcoming events that I would encourage students to take advantage of. Each of these activities will assist students as they plan for their future.
- K-State is having their All- University Open House on Saturday, April 16, 2011. The annual event offers a variety of activities and educational displays in all nine of their academic colleges. KSU encourages students and families to join them on both the Manhattan and Salina campuses. For more information about the open house, go to www.k-state.edu-openhouse.
- The American Legion Boys State of Kansas-Boys State is a Leadership Academy for junior males in the top ½ of their class. It is held at Kansas State University from June 5-11, 2011. Delegate qualifications include being a self-starter and involved in extra-curricular activities in the school and community. Boys State would look really good on the college and scholarship applications you submit next year! Applications are due March 31, 2011. Visit http://kansasboysstate.org/ for more information or call 858-0984.
- Early Enrollment Days at Butler-Early enrollment for Butler of El Dorado is Friday, March 18, and Butler of Andover is Friday, April 15.

We are now registering students for our AP tests, which will be given in May. If your student is enrolled in an AP class, they register in the Counseling Office at the school in which they are taking the AP class. The deadline to sign up for the AP tests is Wednesday, March 16. The fee is $87.00, which should be made payable to the high school where their AP course is taken. NO LATE REGISTRATIONS WILL BE TAKEN as tests need to be ordered over Spring Break.

After Prom is Almost Here &
We Still Need Your Help!!
By Robin Thornburg, After Prom Chair
We are midway through preparation for After Prom, with basically one month left. Just a reminder that After Prom is from 11:00 pm until 3:00 am at West Branch YMCA; however, if your student is only attending After Prom, doors will be open at 10:30 pm. An "informational email" will be sent to all parents as Prom approaches. I have had great response from PAST and NEW volunteers, but I can still use more.
If you have already contacted me or a committee person about volunteering, a committee person will contact you within the next few weeks with information regarding set-up and working the event.
Donations are slow, but hopefully things will improve. We are still very much in need of monetary donations, which are used to purchase food, prizes, gifts, etc. Even a $5.00 dollar donation is better than none at all.
If you can give a donation, please mail your check to Maize High School, Attn: Maize After Prom, 11600 W 45th St N, Maize, KS 67101. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Again, if you wish for your donation to go to Maize South, please indicate that on your check. If you have any questions or want to volunteer, email me at dtrtktet@cox.net or call me at 722-3549.
Thank you for your support of this very worthwhile event.

TARDIES - Do NOT start over at the semester: Parents may call and "erase" up to 3 tardies (per year). This can only be done for a first block class. Students begin receiving Out of School Suspensions once they reach their 7th tardy.
Absences - Do start over at the beginning of each term (9 weeks). Students are allowed up to 5 verified absences during each 9 weeks. These accumulate even with parent verification. Students providing a Doctor/Dentist note (to the front office) will not have those absences accrue. Once students receive their 6th absence in a class, they will lose credit for that course.
Dress Code - In an effort to align with dress code policies, please make sure your student is wearing modest clothing. Wearing low-cut tops or showing midriff, bra straps, or bare shoulders is inappropriate at school. We appreciate your assistance in helping us make sure our students are dressed appropriately. Please consult your son or daughter's student agenda for a more thorough explanation of our policies and guidelines.
Character Education - In the district's endeavor to promote quality characteristics and a caring environment, the March theme is Cooperation. Please join us in helping your student understand the importance of this very important trait and the many benefits it will provide for their future. |
