Ahoy Shipmate!

Man, where has the time gone?  Here we are in September and our summer is essentially over.  Kids have all gone back to school and attendance at the museum has taken its typical fall sharp drop-off.

We marked the 10th anniversary of 9/11 with a remembrance ceremony on the pier  adjacent to Nautilus, at which our banners remembering those lost on 9/11 and in the following military operations were unveiled.  Following the ceremony, the banners were placed on display in the museum where they will remain through September 25, please stop by and see them.  Here are some photos to look at how beautiful they came out.

As a matter of note, the museum fared well in the recent tropical storm.  No damage to speak of; just a lot of labor on the part of the crew putting sand bags in place prior to the storm and then removing same after the storm.

Additionally, numerous exhibits on the museum first floor were moved to the second floor as a precautionary measure to protect them should water get into the museum.  Fortunately this turned out to be precautionary only as no water entered the museum.  Power was off for about 26 hours which meant that the museum fared much better from an electrical power standpoint than did most of the state of Connecticut.

We hope you are all looking forward to the fall season.  Come see us when you can

Sincerely,

Happy Anniversary!

USS Nautilus First Atomic Submarine
USS Nautilus First Nuclear Submarine

September 30 marks the 57th anniversary of the commissioning of USS Nautilus and the dawn of the nuclear age.  To commemorate we are including the text of the principal address given at Nautilus' commissioning.  Although some of the players are different today, the words still ring true.

Remarks of ADM. Jarauld Wright, USN

Commander in Chief, US Atlantic Fleet

Commissioning of USS Nautilus

Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen:

It is with a deep sense of pride that I stand before you to participate in the commissioning of the USS NAUTILUS.  It is always a happy occasion, and in this instance a significant one, to add one more Naval ship of the line to the Protection of America.

Today the Navy turns a channel marker in the course of history.  The entire free world watches as a new instrument of power comes into being.  The placing of the USS NAUTILUS into commission means the beginning of a new era whose horizons are beyond the scope of our accurate vision.  The atom has been harnessed and now, here today, it goes to work.
