MCHF Begins Fundraising Kickoff for Bennett Spring Fishing & Viewing Platform
Bennett Springs is one of the most popular trout fishing areas in Missouri, attracting as many as 180,000 anglers each year. Bennett Springs State Park and the Department of Conservation Hatchery are two of the most popular attractions in southwest Missouri. One of the most popular fishing and viewing areas is the site directly below the scenic dam and waterfall. Anglers and tourist access this area by walking down a steep hill next to the Department Hatchery Office to a rough concrete surface (concrete slurry) next to the spring branch. The rough concrete pad is in need of replacement. The Department plans to design and construct a new stairwell leading to the stream. The renovated fishing access and new stairwell will provide improved public access and reduce safety concerns. Fifth Graders Visit Bird Banding Station at Grand Pass Conservation Area
"I have never in my whole life seen the birds that I saw, like a blue jay and yellow warbler" "Our field trip was the best thing I've ever been to." "I like how you put the bird in a tube to see how much it weighs." "People who band birds are cool." These are a few of the comments from 5th graders from a Marshall middle school after visiting the Grand Pass Monitoring Station this May. Dana Ripper, director of the Missouri River Bird Observatory , and her staff treated the kids to a fun and fact-packed experience that included banding demonstrations, bird identification, information on bird habitats, and games about bird migration. Foundation support helped bring the fifth graders to the station and also paid for a biology intern from Missouri Valley College Read More |
Foundation protects Missouri bird habitat in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula
Many of Missouri's birds overwinter in tropical habitats in Central America and eastern Mexico. Long before Cancun and the Riviera Maya became tourist destinations migrant birds from Missouri were using this part of the Yucatan peninsula for migration stopovers and winter habitat. On their return trip to the U.S, many birds must first stop and forage here--refueling for their 12-18 hour flight across the Gulf of Mexico April 2009 MO Conservationist Article Going South. Tourist developments and urban sprawl continue to reduce the amount of bird habitat in the Yucatan. The Foundation recently teamed up with the Missouri Department of Conservation, Audubon Society chapters, the American Bird Conservancy, and Mexican conservation groups to expand the Yum Balam Flora and Fauna Protection Area west of Cancun. MCHF provided $30,000 from its Missouri Tropical Bird Account to the project, helping to acquire 1,600 acres of suitable habitat north of Cancun. Wood thrushes, prothonotary warblers, blue-winged warblers, Baltimore orioles and summer tanagers are just a few of many Missouri migrants that use this area. |

The Missouri Conservation Heritage Foundation is a nonprofit, charitable organization founded in 1997 to help meet financial needs placed on natural resource conservation and conservation-related outdoor recreation.
The Foundation is separate from the Missouri Department of Conservation but supports that agency's mission of protecting the state's fish, forestry, and wildlife resources for all Missourians. We are governed by a volunteer board comprised of conservation, community, and business leaders. By working with Missouri Department of Conservation staff, who partner with conservation groups statewide, we fund projects that immediately address conservation and outdoor recreation needs. Since it was created in 1997, the Foundation has provided more than $11 million for conservation projects. The Foundation receives funding from several sources, including Conservation Heritage License Plate donations; private donations from individuals, businesses, and organizations; and payments to the Stream Stewardship Trust Fund.
The Foundation offers volunteer opportunities and a variety of conservation giving opportunities. If you would like to speak to a Foundation staff person for more information, call 1-800-227-1488. |
