Our Glorious Myth
Jonathan Hunter

Recently, there was a story in the media you might have seen about an atheist group that sponsored a large billboard informing it's gazers that Christ's birth was "a myth." In an interview with the group's spokesperson, he said they just wanted to inform people (in a big and bold way) that the whole nativity thing was just a "dumb story" - completely made up - and that people needed to be reminded of that fact.
Living, as I do, in a place known for myth-making (L.A./Hollywood) their attempts at debunking the story of Christ's birth by reason of "myth" seemed like such a pathetic waste of money and counter-intuitive for attracting advocates. Humanity loves myth! It might be said that Hollywood's renowned and prolific output is proof positive that people can't get enough of it! Myth isn't bad. Inherent in everyone is a longing to get a glimpse of the invisible, to experience the transcendent, to search out the mysterious, to taste immortality.
We owe so much gratitude and honor to the Lord for being the author and star of our Christian "myth"!!! But what a humble tale it is: God comes down to save the world through an insignificant baby's birth in a simple stall. It's the inspiration behind so many models, especially the whole Superman phenomenon. Ours, however, as C.S. Lewis reminds us, is the only "myth [that] became fact!"

I must confess, other "myths" ensnare me all the time. Even sorrow and disappointment have their own enticements...that is, in leading me to believe that they have the power to overcome, telling us that "We're the real never-ending story!" But that is the conclusion of the world...the bad news from our enemy. By quickly renouncing it I get free and experience a vitality of life that simply can't be gotten through earthbound sources. I experience once again, firsthand, the Truth behind our "dumb story" - it's/He's REAL!

I thank God for our team and ALL the supportive friends and contributors to ELM that continually write and share of their stories-Real myths come true of victory and triumph over death. Theirs are "tales of the Kingdom" as a friend once put it.

We hope you are touched by the testimonies that you view month to month in this Journal.  We believe they'll inspire and encourage you to fight for life...to choose life in the face of impending disappointment, discouragement or illness.  Our fight after all is backed by  "myth" resolved and Realized: "Christ in you, the hope of glory."  And, as it says in Romans 5:5 Our... "hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit whom he has given us."

Our "carolers'" contribution in the video this month represent just a few of the many who have found true hope from the living proof of our glorious myth come true.

"The foundational scripture for Embracing Life Ministries is John 10:10 where Jesus says: 'I came that they may have life, and have it to the full.' Ever-increasing life in relationship with Jesus Christ is the focus and goal of Embracing Life Ministries."

New EL Logo

Along with many of you, 2010 has been a year of budgetary belt-tightening for ELM... and major travel restrictions, too. Yet, it has also been a year of celebrated milestones - for me and the ministry. I turned 60; I had my 30th birthday in the Lord; the ministry had its 25th anniversary; and it's our 5th year as our own non-profit!  Coincidently, we, along with our dear friends and former partners at Desert Stream Ministries, felt it was an apt time to refresh the look of our basic logo (see above). The result is a subtle change, but one that symbolizes our prime message. That is, when we (the "e") embrace the gift of life - Jesus Christ -we are not only experiencing the infinite love and greatness of God (the white surrounding) for ourselves... We are also revealing His Presence to others in that union with Him (the "L" perceived). We thank our friend Peter Xifo for his contribution to the logo, and, as I know Pete would want acknowledged, thank the Lord for His inspiration all along.

                         Quote of the Month

"And the angel said to her...you will be with child and give birth to a son and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; His kingdom will never end." Luke 1:30-33
We hope you will consider sharing this email with friends and loved ones whom you think would benefit from the ministry of Embracing Life. This is a good way to introduce the material and we would appreciate your passing it along. Thanks!
Sincerely,
