A "Life-Altering Condition"?
When we invite people to participate in Embracing Life, what do we mean by the term life-altering condition? We, of course, are including physical illnesses like AIDS, cancer, diabetes, etc.,but also the related anxieties that come with them. ELM was first founded as an outreach to the aids community. However, over the years, it became clear that the material was applicable to many other illnesses as well. Of late, we have expanded the teachings to include emotional and psychological issues. We have seen many come to Embracing Life with depression, anxiety, bi-polar disorder,  the emotional trauma of divorce and grief from the death of a loved one. They are all "conditions" that alter one's life and therefore, fall into that category. Furthermore, one does not need to be currently experiencing an illness to attend; the after effect of a former illness may continue to "alter" their experience of their life in Christ. The trauma of having had an illness may still be at work in their lives many years after the fact.

In conclusion: We like to say that "life" is a "life-altering condition". Having said that, anyone can benefit from our programs.
"The foundational scripture for Embracing Life Ministries is John 10:10 where Jesus says: 'I came that they may have life, and have it to the full.' Ever-increasing life in relationship with Jesus Christ is the focus and goal of Embracing Life Ministries."
Facing Depression, Choosing Life
Debbie Driscoll
"I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life, and he will give you many years in the land..." Dt. 30:19,20
Even though I came to Embracing Life 8 years ago to deal with the trauma of having had tonsil cancer, it wasn't long before I realized that I was living with an ongoing condition that was altering my life in many ways. I had suffered from depression for years and the additional fallout from cancer only made it worse. EL and it's various programs (which we have been addressing in these journals) helped me to identify and heal aspects of my condition that the enemy used to disrupt my life. I've gone on to enjoy many years of freedom because of my involvement  in EL - it's an integral part of my treatment plan.
However, this last year I had a severe bout of depression that was marked by extreme anxiety. It "altered" my life by making it difficult for me to stay connected with others, creating fear and anxiousness, disrupting my sleep and straining my ability to teach and lead in Embracing Life. Along with necessary medication changes, there were three important actions I found helpful to facilitate my healing: to do at least one thing each day in or around the house; to connect daily with at least one friend or loved one; and to stay in contact with the Body of Christ through corporate worship (as often as I could). Though the healing time has been longer than I would have liked, I have no doubt received the God-inspired "treatment plan" that I need. Critical to this plan has been the presence of my dear brothers and sisters in my Embracing Life community. My life-savers.

                         Quote of the Month

"The choices to be made for treatment are often 'quality of life' issues that, for Christians, call one's faith and belief in divine healing into question. Few opportunities in the church exist to openly discuss with others the interplay of medicine and faith." (Jonathan Hunter, pg. 53, Embracing Life Series)
From a Caregiver's Perspective
Neil Driscoll

The path of life leads upward for the wise to keep him from going down to the grave.

Proverbs 15:24

I will never forget the day in 2001 driving home from work, crying out to the Lord after hearing my wife Debbie had throat cancer.  To say that my life has never been the same is an understatement.  The next year and a half included radiation and chemo therapy for her illness that lasted 3 months, followed by the after effects of the treatment.  Being a man and attentive husband, I was in 'do mode' making sure that Debbie made all of her doctor and treatment visits on time... but not taking the time to process my feelings about the what happened.

A year after Debbie's formal treatment ended, the emotional effects of what happened started to surface for me.  By God's grace and timing, an Embracing Life Series was beginning the next week at our church, Anaheim Vineyard.  Debbie, our 18 year old daughter Rebekah and myself joined the group.  While I initially attended ELS to support Debbie in dealing with her illness, by Session Three  it was all about me.

Fear, anxiety, doubt, sadness, isolation and 'who was going to take care of me' were some of the feelings and thoughts that manifested.  While I had addressed many of these issues in the past through therapy and prayer, it wasn't until I worked thorough them in a systematic way in ELS, that I began to experience a more consistent state of peace and hope.  Despite being a Christian for many years and having received much freedom, I can now truly say that my roller coaster ride of extreme highs and lows is over. While I still have the normal dips in the road, I know that with my Shepherd Jesus I can walk through " the valley of the shadow of death" on my ever-upward ascent toward heaven.

We hope you will consider sharing this email with friends and loved ones whom you think would benefit from the ministry of Embracing Life. This is a good way to introduce the material and we would appreciate your passing it along. Thanks!
Sincerely,

Jonathan Hunter
