Does your summer travel include flying on a plane?

For some people, flying means sinus headaches and pressure. To help combat the pain associated with flying, Jay Christopher Fleming, a massage therapist at SolSpring, recommends the following advice:

  • Receive a massage session a few days prior to your trip and relay to your practitioner that you will be flying soon and you want to avoid a sinus headache/pressure from the plane ride. Certain acupressure techniques can clear your sinuses and prepare you for an upcoming flight.
  • A week prior to flying, begin using a neti pot to clear your sinuses. Continue using it after flying, too. SolSpring sells neti pots in our store lobby.
  • Consider receiving a colonic a few days before your flight to help rid your body of excess mucous and fluid that builds up in your body.
  • Drink a lot of water (at least half your body weight) for a few days prior to your flight. This will cause you to urinate frequently and help clear your system of toxins. Continue drinking a lot of water while you are in flight to avoid getting dehydrated (and to avoid a headache!).
  • Blow your nose often to get rid of mucous.
  • Prior to travel, eat lightly (avoid sugar and starches).
  • While in the air, plug your nose and blow out to release air pressure that builds up from the flight.
  • Try to relax. Fear of flying can cause discomfort during the flight in the form of severe headaches. Picture a smooth flight and landing and practice deep breathing.
