Manage Stress with Massage
Did you know that receiving a massage lowers the levels of the stress hormone cortisol? And, when cortisol is decreased, fewer immune cells are destroyed, which means that by getting a massage you are less likely to get sick.

To get the most benefit from a massage, try to schedule your appointment at the end of your work day, or on a day off. "We want the feeling of relaxation to last as long as possible. Take time to stop, rest and listen to your body's response (to the massage)," relays Bonnie Gildea, SolSpring director. You should also drink plenty of water before and after a massage to help flush the toxins that are loosened during massage. And, just how often should you receive massage? Gildea recommends, "As often as you can find the time!"
Just because massage feels like a pampering treat doesn't mean it is any less therapeutic. Consider massage appointments a necessary piece of your health and wellness plan.
What can you do if you are unable to schedule a massage appointment with a professional? Here are some self-massage techniques to help relieve stress:
- Close your eyes and place your fingers under your eyebrows. Apply slight pressure for five to 10 seconds to help reduce headaches and facial pain.
- Relieve shoulder pain by rubbing in circular motions on your shoulder blades.
- Relieve jaw pain by pressing your thumbs behind your ears. Applying pressure in slow, circular motions helps loosen up tight muscles that occur because of clenching or grinding the teeth--two behaviors associated with stress.

The Benefits of Ginger
Ginger tea is a great way to soothe a sore throat, warm up when you are chilled and fight nausea. It is a natural anti-inflammatory and also works well as a compress for achy legs or to ease congestion when you have a bad cold. How to make a compress? Grate fresh ginger into a pot of boiling water and simmer for 10 minutes. Then, soak a hand towel in the water, let it cool slightly, and wrap around shins or place on your chest. Feel your muscles relax and breathe easier naturally.
