WE CHEER YOU!
The Santa Ynez High School Cheer Squad has been a big help to the Solvang Chamber and Solvang Third Wednesday this year.
Their enthusiasm and cheers helped them win the Most Enthusiastic award in the Fourth of July Parade and the girls worked really hard at our recent Member Appreciation BBQ. The Cake Walk at the Solvang Third Wednesday July Family Fun night was a big success too. The girls recently attended Cheer Camp and won the overall leadership award. They also won 5 trophies for the Camp Champs Competition. The Varsity Squad was awarded the privilege of cheering at the NFL Pro Bowl in Hawaii in January based on superior performance throughout the four day camp!
Congratulations to coach Adria Griggs and all the 36 girls. (17 JV, 19 Varsity)
CONGRATULATIONS!
Z-FOLIO Celebrated their 6th Anniversary with Alex Sepkus Jewelry Trunk Show!
In Solvang: Saturday September 1st
Alex Sepkus is a fanatic; the intelligence he applies to his work is far beyond the national standard requirements of a jeweler set by the committee of national standard requirements. Which leads to the second contradiction about Alex: This obsessive approach would normally suggest an absence of humor. Instead, we see in Alex's work an irresistible playfulness, even quirkiness, unrivalled in the world of goldsmith.

LOTTERY DOLLARS SERVE OUR SCHOOLS |
 From the desk of:
Kenneth Harwood
Economist
Solvang Chamber of Commerce
A new school year reminds us that dollars from California Lottery help to fund public schools in the Santa Ynez Valley. Here are cumulative total amounts for fiscal years 1985-1986 through 2010-2011.
The longer the history of a district, and the larger its average daily attendance across the years, the greater is the total of lottery dollars received. Average daily attendance in the table above represents 2010-2011 only. Totals of dollars above are cumulative. Lottery dollars supplement tax dollars in school district budgets.
Additional lottery dollars go to community colleges, University of California, and California State University.
Lottery earnings in 2010-2011 were $3.4 billion. The total return to education was $1.1 billion. A dollar of earnings provided 55 cents in prizes, 32 cents to public education, 7 cents in retailer bonuses and commissions, 4 cents in operating expenses, and 2 cents in game costs.
Californians on average tended to be among less avid players. Massachusetts sold $6.70 of lottery tickets per resident for every $1.00 sold per resident by California, as reported in one study. Massachusetts in November last year authorized its first three casinos. California Lottery earnings were a little less than half of the estimated $6.9 billion of gaming revenues of Indian casinos in California during 2010.
Did we pay enough here for lottery tickets to cover our proportionate share of what came back to education? The information is not public. We might have paid more than our share or less. Chances are we did not pay our exact share.
California Lottery held special attraction for male full time workers who had less than median household income and were nearing retirement age. The most usual players tended to work full time, have household income of $20,000 to $34,999, be 55-64 years old, and be male. Estimated median household income in Solvang, 2006-2010, was $61,289, according to the U. S. Census Bureau, when estimated median household income in California was $60,883. .
Please see California Lottery online for Contribution to Education, and for Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, 2010-2011. Comparison with other state lotteries is online at http://www.ca.gov./crb/97/03/chapt3.html. Go to www.cniga.com for a report on economics of Indian gaming in California. Median income of households is online at U. S. Bureau of the Census, State and County QuickFacts.
