SOLVANG CHAMBER WELCOMES NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
| | |
The Solvang Chamber Board of Directors is pleased to announce Sue Moualim has accepted the position of Executive Director for the Solvang Chamber. As a Solvang business owner, Sue brings an understanding of the challenges businesses are facing in today's economy.
Message from the Executive Director:
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supported my efforts to become the New Executive Director of the Solvang Chamber of Commerce. My husband Jeff and I have been doing business in Solvang for the past 10 years. We started in Solvang when we moved the corporate offices of J & R Industries, Inc. to Solvang from Los Angeles. J & R Industries, Inc. was a manufacturing company that made sealants and coatings for the aerospace and construction industries. When we eventually sold J & R Industries, Inc. we acquired a small jewelry business from a friend of ours in Julian California and moved it here. The Artistic Pony Studio, Ltd. was born!
I have really enjoyed working in Solvang and have had the pleasure of meeting many of my fellow business owners. The Scarecrow Fest may have been my idea but would not be a success without the support of the wonderful businesses in Solvang and Solvang Third Wednesday. Through my efforts as the new Executive Director of the Solvang Chamber of Commerce I hope you continue to support my efforts to move the business community forward.
There are many new ideas in the works and some projects still to be completed which will come to fruition during this year. I also welcome your input about issues that are important to your business. Please feel free to stop in to chat whether we already know one another or whether we are meeting for the first time.

HEADS UP
| | |
You may or may not be aware of the recent robberies in Solvang. Since October there have been 9 robberies involving 7 businesses according to Sgt. Mark Williams. Although there is a suspect in custody for some of the incidents he cautions that further vigilance is required. You may want to post the following phone numbers where they are readily accessible to your staff.
For all emergencies: Call 911
Non-Emergency Daytime: 805-686-5000
Non-Emergency after Hours: 805-692-5743
Sgt. Williams stated that it is best to err on the side of caution. If you feel that something or someone really doesn't look right, you don't feel it is an emergency but you feel it would be wise to report it, absolutely use the non-emergency numbers.

Solvang Enters a New Century | |
From the desk of:
Kenneth Harwood Economist Solvang Chamber of Commerce
Two national recessions and a national disaster in ten years reshaped the business community of Solvang from 1999 to 2009.
The recession of 2001 pierced the bubble of stock prices for information technology firms. Explosive destruction of twin office towers in the World Trade Center of New York on September 11, 2001, slowed tourism in the United States. Visits to our national park system declined after 2000 and recovered in 2009.
The Great Recession of 2007-2009 followed a big bubble in the prices of houses. Three years later house prices remained low.
These three economic events shaped its business community as Solvang entered a new century. Solvang businesses became leaner, more diverse, and stronger during the ten years. Small town scale remained an attraction. Environmental gain was possible
Here are changes in the number of business establishments in Solvang.
Solvang's business community was leaner because the number of business establishments grew smaller by 11 percent.
Declines in number of general retail establishments, and in construction businesses, accompanied 15 percent growth in the number of health care and social assistance establishments.
Professional, scientific, and technical services grew 24%, including legal, accounting, and other services.
Solvang's business community became less dependent upon general retail establishments and construction establishments as it diversified with substantial growth in two service sectors.
The average number of employees in all business establishments grew from 10.4 in 1999 to 11.5 in 2009, or 16 percent, to signal the development of stronger service businesses.
Small town scale remained a positive feature of Solvang as the number of business establishments went down 11 percent in the ten years from 1999 to 2009. Solvang's resident population declined 1.6% to 5,245 from April of 2000 to April of 2010, when census counts occurred. The charms of a walkable small town attracted visitors in their thousands.
Some who prize environmental sustainability might be pleased. Solvang's businesses and Solvang's residents possibly used smaller amounts of resources such as water and fuel in 2009 or 2010 than ten years earlier. The ZIP Code had 29 fewer business establishments and 108 fewer payroll employees. The city itself had 87 fewer residents.
See the Website of National Bureau of Economic Research for dates of recessions. Go online to Statistical Abstract of the United States 2012, Table 1252, for yearly number of visits to the national park system. U. S. Census Bureau Website offers ZIP Code Business Patterns for 1999 and 2009 as of mid-March each year. Data are those of Solvang's ZIP Code 93463, including City of Solvang, Ballard, and the area between the two places. Industry sectors exemplify those exhibiting larger changes. See online American FactFinder and American FactFinder2 for census counts of residents.
