Dear
In Pakistan on Tuesday October 9, masked Taliban gunmen singled out 14-year-old Malala Yousafzai on a bus filled with terrified schoolchildren and then pulled her off and shot her twice in the head and neck.
Two other young girls were also wounded in the attack. All three survived, but teenager Malala Yousafzai remains in critical condition at a hospital in Peshawar.
A Taliban spokesman, Ehsanullah Ehsan, confirmed that Ms. Yousafzai had been the specific target, calling her crusade for education rights an "obscenity."
"She has become a symbol of Western culture in the area; she was openly propagating it," Mr. Ehsan said, adding that if she survived, the militants would certainly try to kill her again. "Let this be a lesson."
Read Malala's story in this issue.
What will you do with what you now know about Malala Yousafzai?
