Greetings!

RGHF Member and RIP 11/12 Kalyan Banerjee
RGHF Member and RIP 11/12 Kalyan Banerjee

My dear brothers and sisters in Rotary!

It's such a pleasure to be here this morning, and to be receiving this honor from all of you. I am of course a very proud member of the Rotary Global History Fellowship, and when I was planning my remarks for this morning I wanted to do justice to the occasion with some appropriate historical references. So I was thinking a bit about what is probably the most famous line out there having to do with history: that those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.

But then it occurred to me that in Rotary, perhaps it might be the other way around-that those who forget our history will not get the chance to repeat it, or at least, to repeat its success. (The entire article and links to President Banerjee)

Rotary Global History Fellowship, Rotary's Memory since 11 October 2000

I have been re-reading this since last May. Other Rotarians are also discovering the wisdom and inspiration of president Kalyan, from India. As many leaders are about to gather, in San Diego, and nearly 34,000 Rotarians are planning their years as club president, I urge them, and you, to read and re-read this short speech.

Also, please enjoy the New Year's greeting from Rotary International founder Paul P. Harris, from 1916, suggested by RGHF zone 17 member Kadaba Srinath Vasudev. (see below)

Yours for RGHF,

Paul Harris
Rotary Founder Paul P. Harris "New Year's Greeting" 1916
Now as the Rotary New Year begins, I wish you all of the prosperity which your good deeds merit.

May all things you ought have be yours.

May your charities rank among your necessary expenditures.

May you not fall into the popular error of thinking that happiness is to be found in outdoing your neighbors.

May it always be yours to look beneath the veneer of life to the solid substance which lies beneath.

May you be builders, not mere climbers.

May you be able to appraise life's blessings at their real worth.

May you be free to act in accordance with the dictates of your own conscience and good judgment.

May you not be slaves to meaningless customs, social or otherwise.

May you shun the groove followers.

May you have vision to discern the right and health, strength and will to do it.

THAT IS TO SAY, I wish you a happy New Year." Paul Harris 1916

ShelterBox is a charity now known throughout the world. However its roots are very much in Cornwall, England. In 1999 RGHF member Tom Henderson O.B.E., a Rotarian and former Royal Navy search and rescue diver started thinking about ShelterBox. He saw the aid response to most disasters was in the form of food and medicine.
