Paul Harris, the Founder of Rotary=

Fellowship: "The vision of a world-wide fellowship of business and professional men united in the ideal of service had not yet come; there were experiences of a different nature yet to be had, but a wonderful foundation had been laid; he had seen life in some of its worst as well as in some of its best conditions. It was a far cry from the peace of the idealistic home in the beautiful New England mountains to the turbulence of Whitechapel, London, or to the human maelstrom which burst its bounds on the occasion of the Haymarket riots in Chicago. Is it any wonder that a young man of impressionable mind who had found so much of good in the midst of evil, who had found so much friendliness in places which might have been barren, who had such reason for faith and confidence in business men, was receptive to the idea of a fellowship of business and professional men? Or that once having realized it he was eager to send it out over the trail he had already blazed and on around the world? Rotary was the child of his imagination and he coveted for his child every advantage which he had enjoyed. Pages 72/73 of "The Founder of Rotary," 1928 Paul P. Harris

Rotary Global History Fellowship (RGHF)
Rotary Global History Fellowship, Rotary's Memory since 11 October 2000

Knowing Rotary's Global History gives us perspective and also reason to question what we do as Rotarians. When Paul Harris got the inspiration for what was to become "Rotary," the term "fellowship" was a common one. The term "fellowship" referred to a fellowship of "men." As Harry Ruggles likely shouted, "Come on fellows, let's sing a song."

Today we are a gender-neutral organization. There are women members on the RI board, and someday a woman will be president of RI. So, is it time to consider an more neutral word than "fellowship?"

Again, Paul Harris, page 254 "This Rotarian Age" 1935. "This is a changing world; we must be prepared to change with it. The story of Rotary will have to be written again and again."

We also pause to reflect, that last week, 27 January, was the 65 year of Paul's passing.

Yours for RGHF,
