NAMI CAN!

Judith Wolen, NAMI California's lobbyist, keeps us informed about what bills are coming up and when and helps us understand the intricacies of the legislative process. The list below is an example of one of her updates. Because she has kept us informed, we have submitted timely position letters to the policy committees before they got to this point - the appropriations committees. We will only be submitting a letter on AB 1453 because we worked with a coalition, the California Coalition for Whole Health, to develop an amendment. As soon as these hearings are over, we will be reviewing for amendments and preparing letters for the floor votes. We will keep you informed.

Links to CRDP Population Reports

A few weeks prior to the OMS transition from DMH to DPH, the finalized Native American Population Report was completed and mailed out to various organizations.  At that time, Native Health Center was undergoing web redevelopment and updates and could not post an electronic version of the report until recently.

Below are the links to all CRDP Population Reports; three of which have been finalized. The API Population Report has completed the public review period and Pacific Clinics will be submitting the final report for DPH approval. The LGBTQ Population Report public review period began on July 16th and goes through August 6th.

Please contact any of the SPW Program Managers (see attached roster) should you have questions related to the Population Reports. Many kudos to Native Health Center, African American Health Institute of San Bernardino County and UC Davis Center for Reducing Health Disparities for the release of the Population Reports.  We look forward to the finalization of the API and LGBTQ Population Reports and the Statewide Comprehensive Strategic Plan on Reducing Health Disparities.

If You Paid for PaxilŽ, You Could Get a Payment from a Class Action Settlement

A class action settlement will provide money  to California residents who were 18 years old or
older and who paid for any portion of the price of  the prescription antidepressant PaxilŽ while living
in California from January 14, 1999 through January 1, 2003, and who qualify under the settlement
(these people are called "Class Members"). If you're  included, you may ask for a payment, or you can
exclude yourself from, or object to, the settlement.

The Superior Court for the State of California, County of Los Angeles will have a hearing to decide whether to approve the settlement so that payments can be issued. The lawsuit claims that GlaxoSmithKline falsely advertised and promoted PaxilŽ as being non-habit forming or non-addictive and that GlaxoSmithKline's advertisements and promotional materials failed to disclose the risk of symptoms from stopping or discontinuing PaxilŽ. GlaxoSmithKline denies each of these allegations.
