Notes from the State Front

Note: The California legislature reconvenes after summer recess on Monday August 6th.

Note: Most of "our bills" have yet to go through the appropriations (finance) committees so we are waiting to see what amendments happen there.

Note: We will adjust position statements as necessary and make them available to all members before they go to "the floor" of Assembly or Senate.

Note: We are planning several opportunities for NAMI California Conference attendees to learn more about advocacy in general and NAMI CA advocacy in particular:

  • Leadership Institute on Thursday
    • Brief introduction to NAMI Smarts in new programs section
    • Advocacy Forum in the evening
    • Workshop on Saturday afternoon - NAMI Smarts training: Emails and Phone Calls

Note:  Vanessa Baird, 54, of Sacramento, has been appointed Deputy Director of Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder Services at the California Department of Health Care Services, where she has served in an acting capacity since early 2012. The appointment requires Senate confirmation.

Note: The Chief positions for Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders have not yet been filled.

Note to keep in mind: California has 36 million citizens. 7.1 m are uninsured (~20%). We expect 4.1 m newly enrolled on January 1, 2014.

NAMI Statement on Aurora Shootings

NAMI has posted a blog authored by Michael Fitzpatrick, The Colorado Tragedy: What Families are Asking. The blog is posted to the homepage of NAMI.org and shared via Blogger and our other social media channels; it is viewable at http://blog.nami.org/2012/07/the-colorado-tragedy-what-families-are.html.

As stated in the piece, it is important to stress that NAMI does not speculate about mental illness or other factors that may be involved in such tragedies-or for that matter other kinds of news events.

However, events such as Aurora often require our perspective and we may be called upon to assist in offering our viewpoint in advance of more details.

As more information surrounding the tragedy unfolds, we will keep you posted of any additional response NAMI may issue. For now, you are encouraged to read, share and join in echoing the blog's messages: the acknowledgement of the sadness of the tragedy and our commitment to helping those in need.

CA Reducing Disparities Population Reports Now Online

A few weeks prior to the OMS transition from DMH to DPH, the finalized Native American Population Report was completed and mailed out to various organizations.  At that time, Native Health Center was undergoing web redevelopment and updates and could not post an electronic version of the report until recently.

Below are the links to all CRDP Population Reports; three of which have been finalized. The API Population Report has completed the public review period and Pacific Clinics will be submitting the final report for DPH approval. The LGBTQ Population Report public review period began on July 16th and goes through August 6th.

To Jonee Shady with Gratitude

NAMI California says farewell and thanks to Jonee Shady, who has served as the Family Programs Assistant for over 5 years. She has faithfully provided the family programs department with administrative support and has served as a trainer in some of the trainings held throughout the state.

Jonee will still be remaining active in the NAMI Los Angeles area and can be contacted via her personal email:  [email protected].

If You Paid for Paxil, You Could Get a Payment from a Class Action Settlement

A class action settlement will provide money  to California residents who were 18 years old or
older and who paid for any portion of the price of  the prescription antidepressant Paxil while living
in California from January 14, 1999 through January 1, 2003, and who qualify under the settlement
(these people are called "Class Members"). If you're  included, you may ask for a payment, or you can
exclude yourself from, or object to, the settlement.

The Superior Court for the State of California, County of Los Angeles will have a hearing to decide whether to approve the settlement so that payments can be issued. The lawsuit claims that GlaxoSmithKline falsely advertised and promoted Paxil as being non-habit forming or non-addictive and that GlaxoSmithKline's advertisements and promotional materials failed to disclose the risk of symptoms from stopping or discontinuing Paxil. GlaxoSmithKline denies each of these allegations.
