Here are the facts about AB 154:
  • Ends discrimination against Californians living with mental illnesses and substance abuse issues by requiring equitable medical treatment and coverage of these illnesses as provided for other medical illnesses.
  • There is no state cost to this bill and little to no cost to the consumer.
  • Substantial  savings  to California  is likely due to the extent hospitalizations, homelessness and incarcerations are reduced.
  • This bill, as it is written, will not affect the Health Benefit Exchange, or the minimum essential benefits plan. That is, it is consistent with federal law.
  • Expands California's current parity bill by:
  • covering mental illnesses before they reach the highly acute, expensive, and disabling level covered by AB 88
  • including substance use disorders
  • covering employees of small businesses.

Thank you for helping!

Ending the Silence

Are you interested in making a difference in the lives of young people? Do you have a passion for reducing stigma and discrimination toward people with mental health conditions through education? If so, join enthusiastic individuals across the state to help deliver the Ending the Silence (ETS) program to your area!

ETS is a 50-minute program designed for high school audiences and is typically presented in the freshman/sophomore health classes during the mental health portion of the curriculum. This transformational program is devoted to giving students an opportunity to learn about mental illness through an informative PowerPoint, short videos, and personal testimony. Through the presentation, students learn symptoms, and indicators of mental illness, and are given ideas about how to help themselves, friends, or family members who may be in need of support.

NAMI California is looking for presenters who are comfortable with self-disclosure, knowledgeable about the various disorders, and people living with a diagnosable mental health condition. Since this program will be reaching out to high school students, we are especially interested in getting young people involved in ETS.

ETS presenter trainings will be conducted in the last two weeks of June via webinar (days and times for each two hour training are listed below). If you're interested in participating in one of these trainings, please follow the link to complete the ETS presenter application and email or fax it to Holly Davison at NAMI California. Registration is limited to 25 people per training, so submit your application today!

If You Paid for PaxilŽ, You Could Get a Payment from a Class Action Settlement

A class action settlement will provide money  to California residents who were 18 years old or
older and who paid for any portion of the price of  the prescription antidepressant PaxilŽ while living
in California from January 14, 1999 through January 1, 2003, and who qualify under the settlement
(these people are called "Class Members"). If you're  included, you may ask for a payment, or you can
exclude yourself from, or object to, the settlement.

The Superior Court for the State of California, County of Los Angeles will have a hearing to decide whether to approve the settlement so that payments can be issued. The lawsuit claims that GlaxoSmithKline falsely advertised and promoted PaxilŽ as being non-habit forming or non-addictive and that GlaxoSmithKline's advertisements and promotional materials failed to disclose the risk of symptoms from stopping or discontinuing PaxilŽ. GlaxoSmithKline denies each of these allegations.
