NAMI CAN!

DHCS Summer Stakeholder Meetings

The California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) announced last week that it has requested an extension from the federal Centers for Medicaid & Medicare Services on producing the state's 1115 Waiver Behavioral Health Services Plan. Summer stakeholder meetings are, however, still in DHCS' plans. Check out the announcement for ways to let DHCS know that you are interested.

Position Change

Assembly Member Valadao made enough changes to AB 2369 regarding prisoner prescriptions to allow NAMI California to notify the assembly member that we were withdrawing our Oppose position. The language now states that it would: require the use of  generic less expensive medications as achieved by the statewide pharmaceutical program, when those medications are  available, unless an exception is reviewed and approved in accordance with an established nonformulary approval process, or unless the prescriber has indicated on the face of the prescription or on any other appropriate form for electronic prescriptions "dispense as written".

While NAMI CA no longer opposes the bill, we cannot move to a Support position because it does not describe an open formulary.

Busy Two Weeks

Whatever happens with the state's budget, there is sadly no place for our voice so we will focus on bills. See the June 11th NAMI CAN! column in the Weekly Newsletter for details.

Ending the Silence

Are you interested in making a difference in the lives of young people? Do you have a passion for reducing stigma and discrimination toward people with mental health conditions through education? If so, join enthusiastic individuals across the state to help deliver the Ending the Silence (ETS) program to your area!

ETS is a 50-minute program designed for high school audiences and is typically presented in the freshman/sophomore health classes during the mental health portion of the curriculum. This transformational program is devoted to giving students an opportunity to learn about mental illness through an informative PowerPoint, short videos, and personal testimony. Through the presentation, students learn symptoms, and indicators of mental illness, and are given ideas about how to help themselves, friends, or family members who may be in need of support.

The program is delivered by a two-person team, including a trained consumer/presenter who relates to the student population by sharing their own journey with a diagnosable mental health condition.

Students are given a resource card with valuable phone numbers and websites for mental health agencies along with a list of symptoms/warning signs of mental illness. At the conclusion of the presentation, postcards are mailed home to parents informing them of the program. They are also given information regarding programs and services offered by their local NAMI affiliate.

The goal of this program is to create a generation of students that are well-positioned to eradicate the stigma associated with mental illness through education and advocacy.

NAMI California is looking for presenters who are comfortable with self-disclosure, knowledgeable about the various disorders, and people living with a diagnosable mental health condition. Since this program will be reaching out to high school students, we are especially interested in getting young people involved in ETS.

ETS presenter trainings will be conducted in the last two weeks of June via webinar (days and times for each two hour training are listed below). If you're interested in participating in one of these trainings, please follow the link to complete the ETS presenter application and email or fax it to Holly Davison at NAMI California. Registration is limited to 25 people per training, so submit your application today!
