NAMI CAN!

NAMI Smarts for Grassroots Advocacy

You already know why advocacy for mental health care is so important, right? You can now learn to tell your story in a powerful way to raise awareness, inspire others and, above all, to influence policy makers!

Kathleen Derby, your MHSA guru, and I just completed the inaugural three-day training in how to teach NAMI Smarts and we will begin rolling out its modules right away. We will present "Meeting Your Legislator (or other Policy Maker)" at the San Francisco Regional Conference in San Mateo in May and "E-Mails and Phone Calls" in a workshop at the NAMI California Annual Conference in August. We will look for other opportunities to present modules throughout the year and, should we be touched by the funding fairy, we will do a special, and the ideal, full-day training that begins with "Telling Your Story", adds "e-Mails and Phone Calls", and tops it off with "Meeting Your Legislator (or other Policy Maker)."

It takes two major components to do effective NAMI advocacy: Policy wonks such as NAMI National's Andrew Sperling, and our Grassroots. NAMI Smarts ties the two together. The policy folks identify the issues, the talking points, and the legislative targets. But, not much happens without the active participation of the grassroots. Your stories, told effectively, and your relationships with your policy makers open, and even change, minds.

This is an exciting program and could not be more timely for California as advocacy for appropriate and effective mental health care moves from the state to the local level. When you see an opportunity to participate in NAMI Smarts, please join us! Mental health care depends on it.
