NAMI's Social Networking Site for Young Adults Turns Two Years Old
Topics: Mental Health, Finances, Relationships, Music and More

On March 23, 2010, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) launched StrengthofUs.org, an online community where young adults living with mental health concerns can provide mutual support in navigating unique challenges and opportunities during the critical transition years from ages 18 to 25.

Developed by young adults, StrengthofUs.org is a user-driven social networking community where members can connect with peers, share personal stories, creativity and helpful resources by writing and responding to blog entries, engaging in discussion groups and sharing videos, photos and other news.

The site offers resources on issues important to young adults, including:

  • Healthy relationships
  • Family and friends
  • Campus life
  • Independent living
  • Finances
  • Employment
  • Housing
  • Mental health issues

"Young adulthood is an exciting challenge, but also a confusing and stressful time for anyone," said Michael Fitzpatrick, NAMI executive director. "Life can throw things at you fast."

"Mental illness affects everyone. StrengthofUs.org is intended not just for young adults who have a mental illness, but for anyone entering adulthood that has a friend, parent or other family member facing a mental health problem."

NAMI CAN!

The Amnesty Program: Legislative News You Can Use

AB 1358- Fuentes, passed in 2011, mandates that every county implement a one-time amnesty period that allows a defendant to make a lump sum payment of 50% of the outstanding balance on certain violations to fully satisfy that court-ordered obligation. It has a narrow window of availability - January 1, 2012 - June 30, 2012.

All adult and juvenile Vehicle Code and non-Vehicle Code infraction violations are eligible. Note: some counties may include certain adult Vehicle Code misdemeanor violations. Check with your local Superior Court for specific eligibility in your county.

You must meet all of the following conditions to be eligible:

  • You have an outstanding traffic case that was due to be paid in full before January 1, 2009.
  • You either failed to appear in court or failed to pay in full.
  • The last date you made a payment was on or before January 1, 2009.
  • You don't owe restitution to a victim on any case within the county where the violation was filed.
  • You have no outstanding misdemeanor or felony warrants within the county where the violation was filed.
  • You must pay the full 50% of amounts due in one lump payment.

The total amount due is eligible to be reduced by 50%. That includes the base fine and any assessments, late charges, and other fees. Parking tickets, driving under the influence (DUI), and reckless driving cases are NOT eligible.

Individuals who are now unable to renew their driver's license due to unpaid tickets may have their driver's license hold or suspension released.

Contact the Superior Court in the county where the violation occurred. Find your court: http://www.courts.ca.gov/find-my-court.htm

Clinic Visits Common Before Service Members' Suicide
From Psychiatric Newsby Aaron Levin.

Primary care clinicians may need more training to spot potentially suicidal troops during routine medical visits.

About 45 percent of military service members who died by suicide visited outpatient medical clinics in the 30 days prior to their deaths, according to Department of Defense researchers.

Even higher percentages of cases of self-inflicted injury (73 percent) or likely self-harm (76 percent) sought medical care in the month before the event, according to a team from the National Center for Telehealth and Technology of the Defense Center of Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury in Tacoma, Wash.

Clara Barton's Dark Legacy of Service

From The Sacramento Bee by By Melinda Henneberger

Between Civil War battles in early 1864, Clara Barton was stuck in Washington, D.C., with time on her hands. She was mentally exhausted by physical inactivity during a winter pause on the front, and frustrated that her latest effort to open a new warehouse for supplies hadn't panned out.

"I am depressed and feel dissatisfied with myself," she wrote in fine, tiny script in diaries now stored on microfilm in the Library of Congress. With so little to do, she paradoxically couldn't rest, and so "rose not refreshed, but cold and languid." For neither the first nor last time, she considered suicide.

"All the world appears selfish and treacherous," she wrote on April 14. "I can get no hold on a good noble sentiment any where. I have scanned over and over the whole moral horizon and it is all dark. The night clouds seem to have shut down - so stagnant, so dead, so selfish, so calculating. ... Shall the world move on in all this weight of dead, morbid meanness?"

A few days later, she fantasized again about killing herself. But then, as Elizabeth Brown Pryor wrote in her 1987 biography, "Clara Barton: Professional Angel," the self-made philanthropist's "dejection was lifted finally by her only true remedy - a need for her services."
