Lothian Buses busback

Newton Public Relations worked with Almond Design recently to create the new 'get there greener' branding for Lothian Buses aimed at wooing us away from our cars and onto the more

Build bridges to better communication

Have you every wondered why, in business life, some people rub you up the wrong way while others automatically click with you?

The answer lies partly in the fact that people have identifiably conflicting communications styles which can keep them on different wavelengths.

We can help individuals and teams identify four different communications leanings which everyone exhibits to greater or lesser extent: the Livewire, the Stepper, the Sensor and the Lightbulb.

These four tendencies are not a measure of skill, but reflect where our mental focus and therefore our communications style and preference lie:
  • Livewires are action-driven, so they typically speak faster and use and respond to language that reflects getting the job done.
  • Steppers set store by process and are therefore more structured in their communication delivery, often breaking explanations down into logical steps.
  • Sensors tend to focus on people, so their language will be laced with references to human factors such as feelings, empathy and relationships.
  • Lightbulbs are those whose thinking and, by extension, conversations are driven by ideas, creativity, and future possibilities.
Learning how to tune into other people's preferred styles and build more impactful communication gives a decisive competitive edge both in internal and external customer communications.

To help clients gain this advantage, we offer half-day and full-day Building Bridges group workshops and one-to-one coaching in personal communication. Interested in how to identify your own style? Call Ken Newton on 0141 354 1422 to find out.

Six steps to sharpen strategy

A useful tool for developing a fresh PR and marketing strategy, whether across the board or for specific projects, is the 6M model.

Next time you're reviewing your approach try working through each of these points, possibly as a team meeting agenda:
  • Mission - what are: the business mission, the related PR and marketing mission and the measurable objectives?
  • Messaging - what are the key positioning messages that will be embedded into PR and marketing activity?
  • Market - who are the main target publics?
  • Messengers - which people will be the communicators for each of the various PR and marketing measures?
  • Methods - what are the best communications channels and tools?
  • Measurement - what will success look like and how will we measure it?
Use the 6M approach both to shape over-arching strategies and as a mental template to run across individual tasks such as news releases, blog posts or
e-newsletters to keep them sharply focused.

On its own, however, it will never be a substitute for fresh thinking. If you are interested in the input of innovative ideas (an unconscious 4I model there!) for your next campaign, get in touch.
