DEPOSIT, NY - Leonard Bus Sales, Inc. is pleased to announce the delivery of three Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) school buses in New York State. The East Greenbush Central School District and Fairport Central School District recently took delivery of PHEV IC School Buses. East Greenbush School district purchased one school bus and the Fairport School district purchased two school buses. The buses are manufactured by IC Bus, LLC, and equipped with a Charge Depleting Enova Hybrid Electric drive system. These 66 passenger buses represent the latest technology available to reduce fuel consumption and minimize emissions output.
These deliveries culminate a long term process which began in 2009 with applications for grant funds through the local DOE Clean Communities organizations to submit competitive proposals to the US DOE for alternative fuel vehicle and infrastructure development funds. This process was facilitated through the New York Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) with partnerships including the Genesee Region Clean Communities (GRCC) and the Capital District Clean Communities Coalition (CDCC), Fairport CSD, East Greenbush CSD, Leonard Bus Sales, Inc. and IC Bus, LLC.
Fairport CSD received approximately $200,000 to offset the purchase of two IC Bus CE Series PHEVs, and East Greenbush CSD received about $100,000 for one IC PHEV.
The new East Greenbush 66-passenger bus entered service the morning of April 15, bringing students to and from Columbia High School and Genet Elementary. Fairport plans to have their new buses begin service the week of May 16th. For both the East Greenbush CSD and the Fairport CSD, these PHEVs are the first school-owned PHEV buses in their area. As a plug-in diesel-electric hybrid vehicle, the bus is anticipated to consume as much as fifty percent less fuel and significantly reduce emissions. While the exterior of the "green" school bus looks the same as a standard yellow bus, the PHEV is powered by a new, cleaner and more fuel-efficient technology. The hybrid system utilizes a large, plug-in battery and electric motor that draws down stored energy over the driving cycle, thus optimizing fuel economy. The system is most efficient in a stop-and-go driving situation, well suited for a school bus that makes frequent stops. East Greenbush CSD is located in Rensselaer County, and the Fairport CSD is located in Monroe County. Leonard Bus Sales, Inc. and IC Bus, LLC. are pleased to partner with these progressive school districts as they provide the safest, cleanest and most fuel efficient transportation solution for their students.
