Bonner's Bulletin
Blackboard Connect
Maize High School has had an outstanding start to the school year! Our Peer Helper organization planned a great day for our freshmen with lots of activities to help them get to know each other, the different clubs and organizations we have to offer, the layout of the building, and some of the people they will come into contact with on a daily basis.
We have a few new policies and procedures in place for the year. We are allowing students to use their cell phones at certain times during the school day. Please see the article in this newsletter for all the details of the policy. Additionally, we have changed our late start to an early release which has thus far been a great change. Freshmen with the proper driver's license may drive to school this year. Parking space has been an issue in the past, but since we now have 500 fewer students in the building, we have room for them to park.
Once again this year, students who plan to attend or participate in any extra-curricular activity, including the graduation ceremony, must consent to participate in the district's random drug-testing program. The program randomly selects 6-8 MHS students on a weekly basis for testing. All students were to return a signed "Consent to Test" form even if one had been turned in previously. Students were given forms and were to return them by August 27.
The tardy policy we implemented last year was a great success. During the 2008-2009 school year, MHS students had 8660 recorded tardies. This past year with the new policy in place, MHS had 2740, which is a reduction of 5920 tardies!
Please remember our high school website has the most current information on the happenings of the school. On our site you can find the calendar, daily announcements, reminders of important news and events, as well as a variety of other items. To access our site, simply log onto www.usd266.com and click on the MHS link located on the right hand side of the district's main page.
The district has changed the dates of Parent-Teacher conferences. Conferences are now scheduled for September 15 from 4:00pm-8:00pm; and September 16 from 12:00-8:00pm. There will be no school for students  September 16 or 17.
Don't forget all students and parents have instant access to grades, attendance, and lunch account information through Skyward's Family / Student Access. Should you need help with that program, please contact Pat Bobetsky at 722-0441 extension 2148.
Please contact the staff of MHS should you ever have any questions or concerns. I hope your student has enjoyed the start of the year as much as I have.

MHS institutes new cell phone policy
In an attempt to incorporate the means by which many families and students communicate, MHS has instituted a new cell phone policy. Students may use cell phones before school, during passing periods in the hallways, during their lunch period in the commons, and after school. We hope this allows easier communication for families and reduces our cell phone violations.
Please remind your students that once they step foot into a classroom, the cell phone cannot be used or disrupt class in any way. They also need to make sure their phones are set to "silent" or turned off during class time so if they receive a message, the phone will not disrupt the learning environment. Additionally, cell phones are not to be used in locker rooms or rest rooms at any time.
Should a student violate this policy, the cell phone will be confiscated, a minimum of an hour detention will be assigned, and the phone will be returned only to a parent or guardian.
We hope that since students can now use the phones between classes without consequences, there will be no reason for them to have a violation.

MHS Agenda Book Error
We recently discovered a mistake in the MHS Agenda Book.  On page 41, in the "High School Traffic Regulations" section, number five states freshmen will not be allowed to drive. That policy has changed. If a freshman has the appropriate license, he/she is allowed to drive to school. They must register their vehicle to receive a parking permit and follow all traffic regulations.

MHS students score well on Assessments
Maize High School students did an outstanding job on the state assessments during the 2009-2010 school year. At this time, the results of the reading and math assessments show MHS met the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) goals established by the state. The AYP target for reading is to have 81.3% of the school's students meeting or above the standard. Maize High had 95.1% of the tested students at or above the standard. In Math, the state target is 76.4% at or above the standard. Our results show 88.9% of the students meeting that mark.
Results of the 2009-2010 ACT test scores demonstrate Maize High School students continue to score above the state average. Results for 375 seniors who took the test  are as follows:

Subject        School      State
English         22.3          21.4
Math             22.1          21.7
English         22.3          21.4
Math             22.1          21.7
Reading         22.9         22.3
Science          22.4         21.9
Composite     22.6         22

Additionally, MHS students who took the test scored above the state average in being prepared for college-level coursework. Through much research, ACT has established benchmarks which indicate a student has a 50% chance of receiving a "B" or higher and a 75% chance of obtaining a "C" or higher. Results for those indicators show the percentage of our students taking the test who met the benchmark:

Subject                          School       State
College English              81%           74%
College Algebra              55%           51%
College Social Science    65%           60%
College Biology               37%           34%

Congratulations to our students and staff who continue to work extremely diligently and achieve high marks on the assessments! Without the tireless efforts of our staff, these outstanding results would not have been possible.

HOMECOMING/SPIRIT WEEK - GO EAGLES!
Homecoming week is right around the corner. This year the Maize High School Student Council is really working to amp up school spirit.  We would encourage students to participate in all homecoming events or at least try to attend one new event during the week. Several of the classic traditions are getting a makeover this year along with the much anticipated addition of a MHS girls powder puff game! Student council has also made changes to the format of the homecoming dance.  Rather than have it be a formal occasion, as it has been in the past, the dance will be a casual fifth quarter event immediately following the homecoming game vs. Salina Central.

The events and dress up days are as follows:

Monday September 27: PJ Day!
Event: come out and support the JV football team
Tuesday September 28: Tie Dye Day!
Event: come out and support the varsity girls volleyball team
Wednesday September 29: Sports day

FROM THE ATTENDANCE OFFICE

Attendance
This year parents will be advised via email of their student's excessive absences. In the past a letter was mailed home.  Parents of students with five and six absences in one block during a nine week term will be contacted. Students with six absences will not receive credit in that class. Those parents with no email availability will continue to receive letters.
Please keep in mind that when your student is absent it is the responsibility of the parents to call the school at 722-0441 within 24 hours to verify the reason for the absence. The absence is unverified without parent contact. The office is open at 6:30 a.m. to receive calls. Should the student miss class due to a doctor's appointment, please have them return with a note from the doctor.
Tardies
All high school tardies are cumulative from the beginning of the school year. Any student arriving to class after the bell without a teacher, counselor or administrator excuse will be considered tardy. Parents may excuse their student for being tardy to the first class of the day three times during the school year with no consequence. After those three are used, tardies to school will count toward the total even when they are parent-excused.  Individual teachers will handle the first two classroom tardies. Three or more unexcused tardies per school year will be handled by the administration as follows:

*The third tardy of the school year will result in a one-hour detention.
*The fourth tardy results in a two-hour detention.
*The fifth tardy will result in a three-hour detention and the student is required to call home.
*The sixth tardy results in a four-hour detention.
*The seventh tardy will result in a one-day Out of School Suspension (OSS).
*The eighth tardy results in a two-day Out of School Suspension.
*The ninth tardy will result in a short-term suspension of a minimum of five days, and an   informal hearing with the building principal will take place before the student may return to school.

Any student over 20 minutes late, without an excused pass, will be marked absent.
Please refer to page 11-12 of the student handbook for further attendance and tardy information.
Remember that you can keep track of the number of tardies your student has by checking Family Access.

Character Education

On Thursday, August 26, Maize High School kicked off its 2010-2011 Character Education program.  The theme for the month of August was "friendship." Each EnCor first watched a brief video highlighting the characteristics of being a good friend. The video included some short segments from three television shows - Friends, Spongebob, and The Big Bang Theory. After the video, the students were challenged to make a billboard similar to those seen around the community that are sponsored by www.values.com. Each EnCor took a picture that represented "friendship" and created a catchy slogan. The information was added to a PowerPoint, and the most creative billboard will be printed by the school store, Spirit Central, and hung in the Commons. All of the EnCors will have their billboards displayed during a lunch. This activity was a great way for the EnCor groups to mix and mingle with the freshmen and new students - and hopefully make some new friends!

Maize Spain Travelers

Amy Dick, Sherry Elder and sixteen students from MHS and MSHS spent fifteen days immersed in the language and culture of Spain this summer! Students spent one week with a Spanish-speaking family after touring as a group for one week.

Would your student like to have this experience in 2012? We will announce our 2012 travel program at 6:00 p.m. on October 7 in room G6 at MHS. Parents and students are encouraged to come to that meeting to find out all the details! Application forms will be available at the meeting. Students who make that decision now to travel in 2012 will be eligible for the "early bird" discount pricing and will be able to start fundraising now! Questions? Contact Amy Dick or Sherry Elder at MHS. Hope to see you at the meeting!

Maize High School COOP Sports Soccer Team
Maize High School is proud to announce the formation of its newest soccer team. This co-ed team is comprised of students with special needs and is a great opportunity for participating in high school sports. This soccer team joins the Coop Sports Basketball team that will begin its eigth year in January and is a classroom favorite. An imperative part of Special Education and a great life skill is the involvement of students in sports and physical activity. Many researchers have found positive correlations between being involved in sports and improved self-esteem, motivation, mental clarity, as well as physical fitness. Being active provides a way to meet new people and be a part of an organization. Sports also create the opportunity to try your best physically, demonstrate sportsmanship, teamwork, and an excellent opportunity to reduce stress. Students find the sports to be the highlight of their week and are proud to be a Maize High School athlete. It gives them a sense of belonging to their school and a way to show school spirit. Both basketball and soccer can be lifetime pursuits for the students and are offered competitively in the Special Olympics and U.S. paralympics. Feel free to take a look at some resources provided by Facebook.  You do not have to be a member to access the sites on this page ... www.facebook.com/help/?safety ...and some of the information is very interesting. Information provided under "General Safety" and "Safety for Parents" would be good to share with students.

Did you know there are 400 million Facebook users?  That number would make it equal to the 5th or 6th largest countries in the world.  Yep, it's a HUGE network!
