This is the last full newsletter of 2010 and I thank all of you for your feedback and support for this years projects. We've received a lot of accolades for both the newsletter and the Being in Practice lecture series, which is very gratifying.

I am committed to writing more in 2011, and plan to publish my first book on energy medicine early in the year. It will focus on presenting the connection between emotions, belief systems around expressing emotions, and physcial and psychological health. I will draw heavily on traditional Chinese medicine concepts, but explained in a way that makes it understandable from a modern perspective, and will give a basis for understanding the role of energy medicine in healing. Look for more details soon, I really think this book will be a practice building tool for all practitioners.

Have a great holiday season and talk to you next year!

- Ka'imi

  Manifest Your Potential

Ka'imi's Chinese Medicine for BodyTalkers course has been incredibly popular since its launch in 2007. We always receive many requests for Ka'imi to teach seminars world wide, at least half of these are for his TCM course. As we look forward to 2011, Ka'imi will be focusing on sharing the invaluable teachings of TCM. But why study Chinese Medicine?

You probably know that the theory behind BodyTalk comes almost completely from Chinese Medicine. BodyTalk has taken the traditional theory, modernized it and integrated it with some different concepts. For example almost everything in Module 3 comes from TCM, packaged in modern language.  Isn't that enough?

Dr Pilipovich thinks not. "If you're interested in energy medicine I can't imagine NOT being interested in TCM because it's the explanation of how it all actually works."

Chinese Medicine is the formal study of observing the energetic connections to symptoms over more than 5000 years. There is a tremendous amount of wisdom that comes from people having the same dialogue for thousands of years. While steeped in history, TCM can be easily distilled into 4 written lines describing the correlation between the body, the energy flow in the body and the psychology of the body, seeing them all as connected and as one. Put simply, if we change our thoughts, our reality changes. We become new people not just psychologically but new people physically. This is the manifesting principle, and the basis of Chinese Medicine.

Ka'imi says "My TCM training has been invaluable in understanding, explaining and getting more powerful links in my BodyTalk sessions. This background will add a lot of insight and depth to your links, giving you more confidence and putting your client at ease. But for me there is a larger goal behind this. TCM gives you an understanding of what it really is to be human. You learn more about yourself and the people in your life, and it gives you a way of understanding your relationship with the universe and your manifesting abilities. I want to offer students a deeper understanding of that. The most satisfying thing for me as a teacher is to share a life skill like that. Sure, it will change your practice but it goes beyond that, it changes your perspective on life."

With this larger goal in mind, Dr Pilipovich is excited to announce his new course ready for release in 2011 - Five Faces. Based on TCM Five Element Theory, it looks at the role your emotions play in your spiritual development and is the experiential companion to Dr. Pilipovich's forthcoming book, 'The Five Faces of God'. This course will develop your understanding as a practitioner, however as no prior experience or training is required it is useful to anyone wanting to know more about themselves and their true nature and gain an insight into the basis of energy work. Keep an eye on our website for more details and release dates in your area.

Blood Deficiency

There is an old adage that to do better work, you should first sharpen your saw. A saw is a simple yet very useful tool, as long as it is sharp and you know how to use it. So before looking for complicated solutions, making sure we have the ability to use the basics is a starting place to improve our skills. In Chinese medicine there are only a few basic substances to be understood. By identifying the underlying imbalance in simple terms, problems that seem hard to understand from a western medicine perspective become approachable. This helps me to understand how my session relates to the client's complaint, and improves both the effectiveness of the balancing and the clients understanding of their condition and how the work is addressing their issues. In this article, I'll talk about the role that Blood plays in health, and what affects the quality of our blood.

The common understanding of blood from western physiology is only a small part of the concept of Blood in traditional medicine, so I'll capitalize the Blood to represent the more traditional concept. The idea of carrying water, nutrients and oxygen to tissues is included in the Chinese medicine understanding of Blood, as it is considered to moisten and nourish the tissues. The moistening and nourishing functions are not further broken down, so the concept is actually easy to grasp. If you ask someone what blood deficiency is, most people will think you are talking about anemia. This represents a deficiency of red blood cells, and hence of oxygen carrying capacity. This would be considered Blood deficiency in Chinese medicine. But Blood deficiency means deficiency of any constituent of Blood. Dehydrated? That's Blood deficiency. Low on blood sugar? Blood deficiency. Low on thyroid hormone? Blood deficiency. And so on for any blood product you can think of. Even numbness is usually just a Blood deficiency, as the nerves are not being nourished well enough to function properly. Muscle cramping is also a sign of Blood deficiency as well - the muscles aren't receiving enough nourishment.

Another major function of Blood is to 'house' the mind. This actually makes a lot of sense from a western medicine standpoint, as blood biochemistry is the functional support for the brain. But it is stated in such simple terms in Chinese medicine so we can go straight to clinical manifestation: when the Blood is deficient, the mind is a restless and homeless. Common symptoms are mental restlessness, mental fatigue, and lack of clarity. Because the mind needs to 'submerge' into the Blood at night Blood deficiency also is a major factor in insomnia and disturbing dreams.

To make good Blood, you need a good diet, as well as good digestion. You also need good Lung function as well as enough rest. Most people have a decent sense of what healthy food is, so if they eat improperly it is mostly as a stress response, therefore anything that balances stress can actually help Blood deficiency. Most people have weak digestion which also leads to Blood deficiency. The biggest factor in weak digestion is worry and anxiety, so working with belief systems that lead to over worry is key to getting good results. Of course, the whole protocol can improve Blood production, so it is really helpful to be able to have definitions to help understand which parts of the session are addressing Blood.

Getting Blood deficiency to come up as a definition is one of the easiest ways to learn to see the connections between your balancing links and the clients complaints. Expressing the correlation between your link and their symptoms in a simple way so you can explain it to your clients is why I developed the Chinese Medicine for BodyTalk practitioners course.

Donna in Canada asked about how to handle a situation where a client is upset by experiencing strong emotional release and is now afraid to come back for another session. She knows she needs to contact the client, but isn't sure what to say to her.

Knowing what to say in different client situations is a learning curve, and why I devoted two whole lectures to the topic in the Being in Practice series (What Should I Say and Opportunities). When you contact this client, you need to make sure she understands that emotional holding is a major factor in disease according to the five thousand year history of Chinese medicine. Storing emotions is a common stress response, but if we don't eventually release the emotion, the stored emotion adds to our stress. This is why BodyTalk includes techniques for releasing emotions. Also explain that it is common for people to feel like they have a lot to process after a session. The point is to make her understand that she is not the only person to experience strong emotions both during and after a session, and that emotional clearing is a natural part of healing at a deeper level. Acknowledge that the process can stir up old emotions and that this is difficult, and assure her that further work will help to clear this emotional holding in a deeper way. Explain that ultimately she will feel better if she chooses to complete the process of releasing old emotions rather than continuing to store and suppress them.

Regina from Canada asks "What do you say to a client who says: 'I think I need something a bit more aggressive to help me with this (health issue). I should probably go and see an Acupuncturist.' OR 'BodyTalk hasn't helped me, but Acupuncture really has.'

As an acupuncturist and a BodyTalker, I like to be fair to both modalities. I am very impressed by how much I can accomplish with just BodyTalk. I am also realistic, and some people do respond better to stronger stimulation. Actually getting acupuncture or taking herbs can really benefit people in certain situations. What I also believe is that although acupuncture can provide dramatic relief, I feel like I get to deeper, more lasting changes using BodyTalk. So although I don't discourage getting acupuncture if a client feels drawn to it, I think the acupuncture is synergized by also receiving BodyTalk. It is unfair to BodyTalk, acupuncture, and our clients to represent either BodyTalk or acupuncture as exclusive options. Why not both?

Ka'imi says - "The theory behind BodyTalk IS Chinese Medicine. As most practitioners don't have training in Chinese Medicine they are not able to understand or explain their sessions fully. In this course I have condensed a great deal of insight from a 4 year degree along with my years of clinical practice into a format that people that can get and really use in just 3 days Feedback from students who have taken this course is that their sessions immediately become more focused and powerful and that their clients really respond to hearing the Chinese Medicine definitions. I hope that you will join me on this exciting weekend and take your practice to the next level."

 The Business End of BodyTalk

Learn the skills to be successful in practice.

"Wow! This series has built on the ethics series in such a practical way. The focus is on making your practice your business and it being a successful business. For me it is timely as after an amazing year culminating in becoming AdvCBP certified, I am going through a process of reformatting my business. Through the first series I got clear on the form I want my business to take. This series is posing the practical questions to enable it to happen. I have formulated this series as a project, by doing this I will have a business logistics document that I can implement at the end. This is the type of series we have been waiting for - we all know parts of this information, it is familiar  - the series just puts it all that business 'stuff' into a structure you can use and apply."

- Hilary Carlile, Adv CBP, Auckland, New Zealand

Lecture 5 - Promoting yourself
Every time you are in contact with a client or colleague, indeed anyone, you are marketing yourself. And some of the most successful ways of promoting yourself are not the most obvious ones.  In this lecture we address the most effective and cost efficient ways to ensure your appointment book is full. You will learn the skills to promote your practice including:

  • Promotional materials for yourself and your clinic
  • Best advertising for visibility
  • Promotional activities including events and lectures
  • How to use your sessions as a promotional tool

Lecture 6 - Giving Lectures

Giving lectures is an excellent and cost effective way to build community awareness of BodyTalk and to build your practice. Public speaking can be very daunting, as can where to start with BodyTalk! Develop the structure and the confidence to present:

  • An elevator speech, great for event stall and networking
  • A client speech, each interaction is an opportunity to sell BodyTalk
  • A public lecture including a suggested 20 minute outline for a range of audiences

Lecture 7 - Mixing Modalities

Many holistic therapists have a range of modalities under their belt to draw from. How do you know what your client is expecting, what is right for them and how to integrate different modalities into your session? What are the ethical and practical considerations when doing this? Dr Pilipovich has a broad range of skills that he draws upon in his sessions, in this lecture he give tips and recommendations as to best practice when mixing modalities including:

  • Why mix modalities, can't BodyTalk do everything?
  • How to use other systems - concepts and definitions or actual technique
  • Clarity and permissions with client
  • Flow and timing of session
  • Using the 'Other Modalities' bubble on protocol chart

Lecture 8 - Distance sessions

Distance healing is a growth area in Energy Medicine. Sessions can be as powerful as in person sessions and for many BodyTalkers, including Dr Pilipovich, distance sessions make up a majority of their practice.  But it can be hard for people to get their head around. How does it work, how do you communicate it to your clients and how to you integrate it into your clinical practice? What are the ethical and logistical considerations? These concerns are discussed in this lecture including:

  • Ethics of treating family, friends or strangers
  • Best focus tools
  • Scheduling, format and client communication
  • Case management - even more important for distance sessions
  • Charging including managing potential administration issues of remote payment

The 'Excellence in Practice' course includes 8 audio lectures and assignments, access to the BodyTalk Unlimited online classroom and forum for questions and mentoring. Purchase at our online store for $192. Individual audio's are available separately for $30.
