Many countries celebrate Halloween later this week, which got me thinking about what we are afraid of as adults. Embracing the difficulties in life with optimism challenges our deepest fears of our own power, a theme that the articles in this newsletter address.
Recording the lectures for the 'Ethics of Successful Practice' audio series really anchored my own understanding of the role my state of mind plays in a session, so I collected a few of my thoughts on that topic for the article 'All About You'.
There's also more excerpts from the interview with my hero, Matt Newell, who is always courageous and optimistic. No matter how 'hard' a situation looks, he always steps up to the challenge.
I address the fear of stepping into practice that many students face to some degree in the Ask Dr. Kaimi section. More information about the new lecture series on this topic is also included below.
And finally, this month I announce that I will be stepping down as Vice-President of Academic Development for the IBA. The IBA staff has expanded over the past year and is now responsible for supervising and managing new course development in-house so it is more appropriate that correspondence about new courses and curriculum development go through the IBA office directly. I will still continue as an Advanced Senior CBI, and I am working on my schedule of courses for next year. I am looking forward to having more time for my private practice and for writing.

Its All About You
|
The final lecture of the 'Ethics of Successful Practice' audio course was titled 'All About You'. In this I address how to handle your own reactions to things that shock you about your client's story, and even how to grow from the experience. But in a way, the title is a really a theme for the whole series. After you learn the techniques, it really is All About You. Who you are being in the session is an enormous factor in how powerful the session will be.
Do you think that your patient has a difficult or impossible condition? Then it will be. If you indulge in pessimism, you will not be open to the best possible session for them - you'll miss asking the right questions. You won't convince their subconscious to embrace even your best links, if you silently doubt that it can work.
Do you think anything is possible? Then it is. Your challenge then is to keep trying to find the right formula, and to trust that you will eventually. Thomas Edison tried a thousand different materials before he found a way to make a light bulb. He got there because right up to the last effort he was able to say "Cool, now I know 999 ways that don't work!" We remember his name not because he got it right the first time, but because he had optimism.
Think your client is stubborn and resistant to change? Think again. We do the permissions balancing not only to help the client, but to help ourselves move past our own pessimism. Just asking permissions sincerely changes your energy, and it changes the whole dynamic between you and the client. I recently recalled a story from ten years ago that really illustrates this idea.
When I first learned BodyTalk, I was working at luxury resort spa in Hawaii, doing general massage as well as manual therapy and meridian therapy. So I was constantly giving massages to people I had never met before. Since I am a big guy, I had really had to be conscious of winning their trust through my touch, as the natural tendency was for people to be a little bit guarded and tense for the first few minutes of the massage, protective armoring in case I worked too deeply.
As soon as I learned BodyTalk I was committed to asking permissions for everything I did, so I silently got a Yes and No from each massage client, and then silently asked "Permission to give a massage?" of each client before proceeding with the work. As soon as I did, they would instantly melt onto the table. They were more relaxed in the few seconds that it took to ask Permissions than they normally would have been halfway into the massage! Which made me relax as well. I sure wish they had taught me in massage school that having the humility to ask permission was as good as a half-hour of massage. The real point is that asking permission shifted me first, then the client reacted to the shift in my energy field.
It was truly all about me.

Hero of Hope
|
In our last newsletter we presented excerpts of an interview with one of Ka'imi's personal hero's, Matt Newell, who shared some of his insights and experiences with us. You'll find more from this inspiring interview is below. Matt is an Occupational Therapist and CBI, an one of the most humble and inspiring people that you may ever come across. Matt and his wife Carol run a clinic in Philadelphia called the Family Hope Center (FHC) and travel all over the world seeing clients with severe brain injuries. Matt and his team are a bridge of hope for families and children around the world. The whole audio interview is available for on the resources page on our website www.bodytalkunlimited.com
Go to the FHC website to be inspired and broaden your horizons. www.familyhopecenter.org
When families come to you they're despairing of hope. How do you support the family as well as the child.
The reason why parents go from despair to hope is that they see a solution that is neurologically based and the family is surrounded by us and we don't give up. We simply are not interested in giving up. And we have a great team who looks for answers because we believe the answers are there, we just have to persist in finding them. Its hard work to heal your kids. We don't get our parents to work harder, we get them to work smarter. We teach the family and we bring hope to the family and make sure the mother and fathers are equipped. We take care of them. If they are taken care of then they can turn around and help their kids.
You work with your wife. How did you come to the same line of work? How is it to run a business with your wife?
My wife is from England and we started working together in the same organization that was working with children with special needs. I got to see her in action and fell in love with her, she's spectacular in her ability to help kids. We decided we were going to begin the FHC. We can't be happier. We're doing exactly what we want to do. We're helping kids, we're working together. She appreciates what I bring to the table and I appreciate what she brings to he table. We're blessed. What do you like most about what you do.
I love to see the kids improve. I love to see the parents working out their parenthood in a very effective manner instead of not having any clue about how to help their kids. I can't stand to see a hurt kid. It's almost in my genetic code. I do love the brain, I do love the way it heals itself, I do love the way it expresses itself. I do love the way the whole human body works together. I come into work at 8oclock and all of a sudden its 8 o'clock at night. I'm one of the lucky ones who get to do exactly what I want to do and get paid for it. I can never see myself retiring. Why would I retire from something that fills me with such joy, to watch children heal. Which I believe is a right and a privilege for all of us.
You've had 2 children yourself who suffered neurological dysfunction. How did you balance caring for them and running the practice, and what have you learned from that experience?
My 2nd child was born well but by a series of vaccination shots she became hemiplegic, she stopped moving and she was in deep trouble. It took us about 9 years to heal her brain. You have a choice; you're either going to whine and complain about the problems in your life or you're just going to focus on the solution. Was it easy, no. Did we still have to work full time, yes. My wife was home schooling, I was working 12 hours a day. But I spent every bit of time that I could, I just thought "what is the most important thing I can be doing as a father right now, supporting my wife and loving my kids in a practical way". I don't think its easy but if you're going to do what you need to do you've got to be different, you've got to be a better person, you've got to grow yourself. Your family cannot move forward unless you move forward first. They can't grow unless you grow, you've got to suck it up, man up, look at the issues that you have in your own life that are preventing you from moving forward and you've got to deal with them. All our families have a capacity to look at themselves honestly and say if my kid is going to move forward, I've got to move forward first to make space for them. For me personally I had to become more organized and quit some of my personal things on the side so I could work and heal my daughter. She couldn't read at all, wasn't very coordinated. She became a natural gymnast, a concert violinist; she's at graduate school. She's brilliant because we just persisted. She looks back on the days of us healing her and says "my dad and my mom were always there I struggling, I didn't know what I was doing but they never left my side. I never remember them being depressed, they always seemed happy." What's the point of being depressed, we're in the solution. Having a solution, its hopeful. It brings us closer together.

Ask Dr. Ka'imi
|

We recently had a question from someone who took Module 1&2 sometime ago, but has since been out of work and unable to monitor the course and qualify for her CBP exam. Her question is how do I get back on track with BodyTalk?
Hooray! The universe has already managed to solve two of the biggest problems facing people wanting to start a practice: time and motivation. Finding time to study and do practice sessions is hard when you are busy with full-time work. You don't have that problem. So start doing practice sessions as soon as possible.
You will get better results if there is energy exchange. This is where the universe had again provided for you, as you cannot afford to give away practice sessions forever, a mistake that many people make if they do not have the motivation of economic necessity to getting income from sessions. Unless you are already a practitioner of some type, charging for BodyTalk sessions while your practicing is not appropriate, but it is okay for you to receive donations. So tell people that you are making a career transition, and that you are requesting donations to help pay for satisfying the requirements to be a CBP. If they ask how much, you have to say it is up to them, but you can also add what professional practitioners charge in your area, but that you will not have a set fee structure until you are certified.
I've lost confidence in my muscle checking and don't feel I can practice on people until I am confident. How can I get over this?
By practicing! Who cares if your muscle checking is accurate or not! Just tap out all the links that you get and relax. This may seem cavalier, but you will never get out of a crisis of confidence by second-guessing your answers. What are you afraid of? Being wrong? Every practitioner is wrong some of the time, so get over the idea that you have to be perfect. The whole point is to remember that if you tap out links the body doesn't need, nothing bad will happen, you simply won't get results on that link. You are likely to get some links right, so you will still get results as long as you try. Even if you do a session that is mostly inaccurate, you are still doing better than doing nothing.
As long as you remember that all of your answers are potentially wrong, you won't give advice based on the muscle checking. So give it a go and try! When in doubt, do cortices!
For more information about the practical and theoretical aspects of muscle checking, check out the audio lecture 'Yes, No, or Maybe' from our online store.
