 Winter Weather Tips

Dennis S. in Geneva:  Flipping your barrel updside down is an easy fix to keep snow out.  Saves space in  the garage, too.

John Z. in Naperville:  Unless you place your barrel in the middle of your garden like I do, put large flagstones to redirect water away from the house until you use it in spring, or reinstall your original downspout with a couple of sheet metal screws.

Gene Z. in Naperville:  If you don't use a diverter kit, use a flexible gutter extension when you scoot the barrel over and tarp it or lid it for winter.

Linda T. in Aurora:  In the spring set your barrel out to get natural moisture from dew, mist and early soft spring rains.   Why waste time, energy and money filling with a hose?

Kyle Banas of Pizzo Nursery:  Get in touch with your inner artist and paint a design that reflects on who you are, or ask a professional artist to create a one of a kind design, like Jeanne of Hampshire, IL.  Email Kyle at Pizzo (see link in "our EcoFriends" this issue)  to reach Jeanne.

Ruth in Geneva: Shop off seasons for pavers to place under your barrel in the spring that match your landscaping to create a stable and attractive surface.

Barb in Batavia: Coat your barrel in oil to add rich color and

weather resistance

Call Marsh Products to make arrangements to have it done for you.

From Johnny in Batavia: I put my unused recycle bin lid on my barrel last year to keep winter snows out. Worked great!

Keep sending those tips and photos!

Get ready for the big chill....Oak Rain Barrels are beautiful but they do take a little care.  Here is a cold season tips for you:

OFF-SEASON STORAGE OF YOUR OAK BARREL

For the winter season, open the spigot and store empty.  You may bring the barrel in out of the weather for maximum lifespan, or turn it upside down, or tarp it, or cover it with a lid so water cannot accumulate and become ice that may expand. (Some use a recycle bin lid to block snow from entering the barrel).  Be sure to set the barrel on a solid base such as stone pavers rather than mulch or soil to keep it secure, and also to extend its life.  Plan to reinstall your downspout or use a diverter so you are prepared for the cold season.

See ARCHIVED NEWSLETTERS for more tips on how to install your barrel.
