Our Future Depends Upon It:  Entrepreneurship in Rochester

Join us this Tuesday, October 16th at Locust Hill Country Club whereRichard Glaser  our guest speaker will be Richard Glaser, Founder of RochesterGrowth.

Mr. Glaser started as an investment banker in Merrill Lynch's mergers and acquisitions department in the mid-'80s.  He spent most of his career in venture capital as a partner in several New York City-based funds affiliated with Lepercq, de Neuflize, Hudson Ventures and Village Ventures.  He now works directly with entrepreneurs and businesses owners as a financial advisor with a leading securities firm.

Mr. Glaser was an adjunct professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology, where he taught entrepreneurship.  He co-founded and was president of Digital Rochester and was a board member of the Greater Rochester Enterprise.  He also served as a board member of the Venture Investors Association of New York and as annual giving chair of Haverford College.  He is currently on the boards of Rochester Angel Network, Rochester Economic Development Corporation and Jewish Family Service of Rochester.

Mr. Glaser graduated Haverford College and received a Masters degree from Columbia University's School of International Affairs, specializing in international business.  He attended the London School of Economics and studied Chinese at Middlebury College.

If you plan to bring a guest to this Tuesday luncheon please contact the Rotary Office, 546-7435.

President John's  Journal

I have to admit that I was more than a little nervous about yesterday's program. The debate between the NYS Senate Candidates Sean Hanna and Ted O'Brien turned out to be an excellent forum to see their differences of opinion, and they proved themselves to be highly qualified and worthy candidates. My anxiety was based upon the difficulty of coordinating details and schedules for each candidate, but it all worked out just fine. I'm reminded of that most appropriate quote, "Worry is like a rocking chair, it gives you something to do but gets you nowhere."

All in all, I love having the candidates appear before us and I am convinced that Rochester Rotarians will certainly rank among the most informed voters come November 6th.

=============

Last week Ray Isaac, President of Isaac Heating & Air Conditioning, won the Business Person of the Year Award from the Small Business Council. In his honor, Past President Jim and Shirley Isaac generously accepted a fine from Past President Linda O'Neil for Ray's and the company's achievement. Not sure of the connection, but Jim told us he is wishing for a long cold winter followed by a dreadfully hot summer.

=============

This past Sunday afternoon Sandy and I attended the concert performance of the Marine Corps Band, "The President's Own", at the Eastman Theater. I saw Betty Strasenberg there and we both agree that the concert was magnificent. Being a former Marine Officer, you might imagine my pride of Corps and Country as we listened to the Sousa marches and their Classical Overtures. Near the close of the concert, however, came the most wonderful surprise. Of the 55 members of the band, 8 of them were recognized as graduates of the Eastman School of Music! Proud to be a Marine - Proud to be a Rochesterian!

B2B After Hours Event - School of the Holy Childhood
Holy Childhood

Our next Business to Business After Hours event will be held Thursday Oct. 25th from 4:30-6:30pm at the School of the Holy Childhood!

We will have the opportunity to tour the school as Holy Childhood's Adult Day Training Program provides vocational training, sheltered employment opportunities, transitional day habilitation and recreational programming for over 95 adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities. With three sheltered employment workshops housed in this program, the most widely known is the Special Touch Bakery which produces 17,000 pies annually. Other areas of note are the Woodworking shop in which our adults produce beautiful items such as cutting boards and Adirondack chairs and the PWI workshop which contracts with local businesses to process high volume projects such as bulk mailings, sorting and fulfillment.

Lastly....get ready for a bake off! We will - with the help of Holy Childhood Bakers - have the opportunity to have a pie contest.

RSVP today to Brandi@rochesterrotary.org or 546-7435 x210.

Ever wonder what it would be like to teach simple lessons to a classroom full of young children?

We have an opportunity for you, and you don't need to have anyJA in a Day  teaching background in order to take advantage of it. It's called JA in a Day, a Junior-Achievement-sponsored day wherein Rotarians act as substitute teachers for a day, inspiring youngsters to take what they're learning in school and applying it to the real world.  Junior Achievement gives you a kit full of all the lesson plans and activities you'll need to have a successful and fun day with your students.

Please set aside Thursday, November 15th to volunteer for Rochester Rotary's JA in a Day at School #8.  You can choose to volunteer just in the morning from 8-11 am with kindergarten and first graders, or from 8 am - 1:30 pm with second through sixth graders.  You will be paired up in the classroom with another volunteer, and the children's teacher will be in the classroom with you as well.

We have 13 volunteers already signed up; we need 12 more to make this day a success. Please contact Tracey Dreisbach at tracey@rochesterrotary.org or Bill Keenan at bkeenan@rsdeaf.org if you'd like to give it a go.

We will have training dates to prepare you for what will happen during the day on the 15th and become familiar with the materials.

The training dates will be held in the Rotary office on:

  •           Friday, October 12th: 8 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.
  •          Wednesday, October 17th: 12 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.
  •          Monday, October 22nd: 4 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.

This will be a day to remember.    Don't wait - Sign up today!
