55th District NYS Senate Debate

Join us this Tuesday, October 9th at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center where we will be joined for a debate by NYS Senate Candidates for the 55th District Assemblyman Sean Hanna and Attorney Ted O'Brien.

Assemblyman Hanna has a reputation for frugality, and a calling to public service. Shortly after graduating law school, Sean joined the Monroe County District Attorney's Office, where he served as a felony trial prosecutor for six years. In 1995, Hanna was elected to the Monroe County Legislature. His colleagues soon named him Deputy Majority Leader. His eight-year tenure in the county legislature ended when then-Governor George Pataki made Hanna the Avon-based DEC Regional Director for the 11-county area enveloping Rochester, the Finger Lakes, and Corning/Elmira. Sean Hanna served as a lead trial attorney for County Executive Maggie Brooks' administration before his election to the New York State Assembly. (To view Sean's biography in its entirety http://www.hannaforsenate.com/about-sean/)

Ted is an attorney who received his Juris Doctor from Syracuse University in 1982. He earned his undergraduate degree at Union College in 1979, and graduated from Webster's R.L. Thomas High School in 1975. An active member of his community, Ted serves on the College Council of the College of Brockport, the Advisory Board for the Finger Lakes Region of the American Cancer Society, and the Board of Directors of Heritage Christian Services. If you plan to bring a guest to this Tuesday luncheon please contact the Rotary Office, 546-7435.

President John's  Journal

Johnny Antonelli hit a grand slam at yesterday's meeting. What a class act this guy is. Scott Pitoniak provided an interview type format for his conversation with John by framing a series of events in Johnny's career and letting the Rochester icon then fill in the details and "the rest of the story". Humorous, historical, emotive and so well-articulated. A special gift for the kids at School #8 was a copy of Scott's book, Johnny Antonelli - A Baseball Memoir. The book was personalized with a note from Johnny that he had played against and gotten to know Roberto Clemente and always respected what a great player and fine man he was. Very touching.

We gave John and Scott a couple of hearty rounds of applause, but nothing lit up the room more than the glow on Gail Antonelli's face as she beamed with love and respect for her husband as he talked about the highlights of his career.

We also had a special guest yesterday. District Governor Gavin Hurley came simply to hear the program and enjoy our fellowship as he is a life-long baseball fan. Whew! I thought he was there to audit our procedures and fine me for egregious violations!

Finally, there was a wonderful table of Rotarians yesterday right in the center of the room that could not go unnoticed. There was an air and aura on that table that was all about long term relationships, wisdom, commitment, generosity, and loyalty. Just think of the Rochester Rotary history that was represented at that table by Fred Quirin, Dick Lee, Harold Feinbloom, Herb Schwartz, Hu Velepec and Fred Halik. What an honor to have these men amongst us.

=============

Yesterday's Tootsie Roll Bright Spot Award was presented to Paul DeCarolis. There cannot be a more gracious gentleman and generous Rochester Rotarian than Paul. He and his firm support every event, participate in every activity, and he serves as an outstanding ambassador for Rotary in our community. Congratulations Paul, well deserved! By the way, he only took 2 Tootsie Rolls out of the bag so if you're thinking about asking him to share you are probably out of luck.

=============

Do you remember my "1 degree" challenge? That if each of us changed our Rotary course by "1 degree" we could make more than a miles worth of difference in the quality of our club? Well, I am delighted to report that several Rotarians have come to me over the past few weeks to "Report" on what they are doing to meet the "1 degree" challenge.

  • One Rotarian has set the 4-Way Test as her screensaver AND has volunteered to work on 3 events.
  • One Rotarian has attended more consecutive Tuesday luncheons than ever before.
  • One Rotarian has joined his first committee after 3 years of membership.
  • One Rotarian has proposed a new member for the first time.
  • One Rotarian joined the Tootsie Roll Club just so he could nominate a Bright Spot Candidate.
  • One Rotarian unsubscribed to Spoke because he doesn't like my Journal L

If you are meeting the "1 degree" Challenge, Thank you! And, let me know what you are doing.

Ever wonder what it would be like to teach simple lessons to a classroom full of young children?

We have an opportunity for you, and you don't need to have anyJA in a Day  teaching background in order to take advantage of it. It's called JA in a Day, a Junior-Achievement-sponsored day wherein Rotarians act as substitute teachers for a day, inspiring youngsters to take what they're learning in school and applying it to the real world.  Junior Achievement gives you a kit full of all the lesson plans and activities you'll need to have a successful and fun day with your students.

Please set aside Thursday, November 15th to volunteer for Rochester Rotary's JA in a Day at School #8.  You can choose to volunteer just in the morning from 8-11 am with kindergarten and first graders, or from 8 am - 1:30 pm with second through sixth graders.  You will be paired up in the classroom with another volunteer, and the children's teacher will be in the classroom with you as well.

We have 13 volunteers already signed up; we need 12 more to make this day a success. Please contact Tracey Dreisbach at [email protected] or Bill Keenan at [email protected] if you'd like to give it a go.

We will have training dates to prepare you for what will happen during the day on the 15th and become familiar with the materials.

The training dates will be held in the Rotary office on:

  •           Friday, October 12th: 8 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.
  •          Wednesday, October 17th: 12 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.
  •          Monday, October 22nd: 4 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.

This will be a day to remember.    Don't wait - Sign up today!
