Talking Baseball with Pitching Legend Johnny Antonelli & Author Scott Pitoniak

Former National League All-Star and World Series hero Johnny Antonelli and award-winning columnist and best-selling author Scott Pitoniak will share stories from Antonelli's illustrious baseball careAntonellier and sign copies of their new book at the Rochester Rotary Club's Luncheon at the Locust Hill Country Club on Tuesday, October 2.

Copies of Johnny Antonelli: A Baseball Memoir will be available for $20, with $4 from the sale of each book being donated back to the Rochester Rotary.

Antonelli, a Rochester native, signed a "Bonus Baby" contract with the Boston Braves for $52,000 shortly after graduating from Jefferson High School in 1948. It wasn't until six years later, when he was traded to the New York Giants, that the stylish lefthander began realizing the potential the scouts had seen in him. In a seven-year stretch, from 1954-59, Antonelli established himself as one of the game's best hurlers, compiling a 114-89 record, 22 shutouts and nine saves while being named an All-Star five times. He twice won 20 games and is one of only two pitchers in baseball history to record a win and a save in both World Series and All-Star Game competition. Following his retirement from baseball in January 1962, Antonelli became a successful entrepreneur in the tire business.

Antonelli will participate in a question-and-answer session with Pitoniak, the former long-time Democrat & Chronicle sports columnist and author of 16 books.

Please join us for what's sure to be a fun-filled trip back in time to the Golden Era of baseball.
President John's  Journal - From the Road

Sorry I missed seeing all of you at yesterday's meeting. I am out in Vancouver B.C. on business. I know, I know - I'm supposed to be retired. But when someone says they need you and are willing to pay, it looks perilously close to a compliment. Anyway, I am working hard out here and am now re-tired!

Vancouver is a beautiful city and if you've been here I assume you will agree. If you have not, put it on your list with an A priority.

President Elect Bob tells me that the presentation yesterday by Maggie Brooks was a hit and played to a full house. And, that Don Alhart did an excellent job of moderating. A little bird also told me that Mr. Attardo did a wonderful job of leading the meeting.

Rotarians Amanda Galley and Bob Enright were fined for being in the news without their pins on. Great Fun! Also, Rotarian Bob Witmer and the entire program committee were recognized for the fantastic job they are doing and the hard work that goes into planning every meeting.

Last week Tracey and I met with the fall 2012 New Member Class. I wish you were there. 20 bright, smiling, energized and committed professionals who find Rochester Rotary worthy of their time and talents. Awesome!

The reason for the meeting was to come together as cohorts and begin planning for their class to conduct the Tuesday Luncheon Forum on February 5th. In addition, they are organizing a class gift to the Keep the Sun Shining Campaign as well as planning a class project out at camp.

Captain Jeff Bartkoski led the group in choosing the leaders of the class and here they are:

            President

Terry Kelly, M&T Bank

            Vice President

Jennifer Sommers, MC Sheriff's Dept.

            Class Gift Coordinator

Diane McCue, Retired GM and Corp. VP Kodak

            Class Project Coordinator

Patrick McGrath, Grace Community Services

            Class Luncheon Chair

Lori Parker, Attorney

Sadly, at the last meeting of your Board of Directors we accepted the resignation of a member who has been with us for less than a year. Reason he resigned? He did not feel engaged nor able to "break in" to the strong relationships that already exist in Rochester Rotary. We all need to "go first" and be constantly pro-active about new member engagement.

Here's the plan . . . Red Name Badge = Make Contact.

Ever wonder what it would be like to teach simple lessons to a classroom full of young children?

We have an opportunity for you, and you don't need to have any teaching background in order to take advantage of it. It's called JA in a Day, a Junior-Achievement-sponsored day wherein Rotarians act as substitute teachers for a day, inspiring youngsters to take what they're learning in school and applying it to the real world.  Junior Achievement gives you a kit full of all the lesson plans and activities you'll need to have a successful and fun day with your students.

Please set aside Thursday, November 15th to volunteer for Rochester Rotary's JA in a Day at School #8.  You can choose to volunteer just in the morning from 8-11 am with kindergarten and first graders, or from 8 am - 1:30 pm with second through sixth graders.  You will be paired up in the classroom with another volunteer, and the children's teacher will be in the classroom with you as well.

We have 13 volunteers already signed up; we need 12 more to make this day a success. Please contact Tracey Dreisbach at tracey@rochesterrotary.org or Bill Keenan at bkeenan@rsdeaf.org if you'd like to give it a go.

We will have training dates to prepare you for what will happen during the day on the 15th and become familiar with the materials.

The training dates will be held in the Rotary office on:

  •           Friday, October 12th: 8 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.
  •          Wednesday, October 17th: 12 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.
  •          Monday, October 22nd: 4 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.

This will be a day to remember.    Don't wait - Sign up today!

Rotary Boot Camp
Rotary Boot Camp is a quick "training" on all the "ins" and "outs" of Rochester Rotary. We ask that all new members attend one session -- as well as longtime Rotarians who need a refresher on their Club.

These sessions are both social and informative. Strap up your boots and save the date, we will save you a seat!

Wednesday, October 3rd - 4:30pm
Rochester Rotary Board Room (180 Linden Oaks)

Please RSVP to Linda Garland in the Rotary Office if you plan to attend - lgarland@rochesterrotary.org or 585-546-7435 x201.
