NYS Supreme Court Justice Race | |
Join us this Tuesday, September 18th at Locust Hill Country Club where our guests speakers will be Supreme Court nominee Sean Gleason and Judge Gail Donofrio. They will be discussing the criteria to determine your vote for the right Justice.
Sean Gleason has over 23 years of experience, trying cases and deciding matters in courts all across the State. With increasing case loads and a shrinking budget, our Courts face increasing challenges as we move into the future. We must elect Judges that are not only willing to work hard to ensure that justice prevails, but also Judges that are well prepared to hear cases of all types immediately, and to handle them swiftly and efficiently. Sean was rated highly qualified by the Greater Rochester Association for Women Attorneys and the Rochester Black Bar association. His varied and extensive background has uniquely prepared him to hear even the most complex matters.
Judge Donofrio was first elected to the Monroe County Family Court Bench in November 1998 and re-elected in 2008. Designated for appointment by Chief Judge Pfau in March, 2011, Judge Donofrio currently serves as the Supervising Judge of the Family Courts for the Seventh Judicial District and as an Acting Supreme Court Justice. In her capacity as Supervising Judge, she oversees Family Court operations in Monroe, Livingston, Wayne, Seneca, Yates, Ontario, Steuben and Cayuga counties.
If you plan on bringing a guest to this Tuesday's luncheon, please contact the Rotary Office, 585-546-7435. |

President John's Journal |
Doesn't it always feel good to help others when they need and deserve our support? Such was the case this past Monday evening when an enthusiastic Community Service Team of Rochester Rotarians volunteered to help out FoodLink. The event was FoodLink's annual Festival of Food at the Public Market and it was a terrific experience from start to finish. This is their biggest fundraiser of the year and over 100 restaurants, wineries, micro breweries and specialty food vendors entertained a crowd of over 1200 hungry and thirsty people who attended. Rochester Rotarians sporting "Proud Member of Rochester Rotary" aprons provided all kinds of support activities and the FoodLink staff was "blown away" by all we did to help them out. Rochester Rotary and FoodLink, two world class organizations working together to make this community a better place to live. Kudos to President Elect Bob Attardo for his leadership of our new Community Service Team Committee. This is one fired-up and energized committee and if you want to help out with their next project, contact Brad Pearson who is in charge of recruiting volunteers that like to have fun while supporting worthy causes.

I would rate yesterday's meeting as "So-So". SO Excellent and SO Important for our community to be on the leading edge of Restorative Justice initiatives. Peace in the world starts with peace at home and the greater Rochester area is blessed to have committed professionals like those we had on our panel yesterday. This was truly an outstanding presentation by Dr. Rebecca Johnson, RIT and The MK Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence; Officer Michael Santana, Rochester Police Department; Reverend Alan Newton, Partners in Restorative Initiatives; and the Honorable Judge Vicki Argento, Monroe County Court. The icing on this cake was a comment by our own Honorable Tony Sciolino who had gone through the facilitator training for RJ (Restorative Justice) and commended all Rotarians to support and involve themselves in suggesting this process whenever appropriate.
We learned a lot about the process and the relationship between Restorative Justice and Criminal Justice. Here are a few key takeaways that was new information to me.
· RJ is not just appropriate for youthful offenders but adults as well.
· RJ often works in concert with the Criminal Justice process and punishment.
· RJ is never intended to be the "let them off easy" approach.
· RJ can play a significant role in fostering long-term peace for victims and communities.
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." Margaret Mead

Fines and Recognitions: We had a little fun with Club Treasurer Don Twietmeyer regarding a comment he made at Harry Blaeser's calling hours. I'd share the story with you here but I was fined by Past President Andre Godfrey for bringing it to the attention of the club and I fear for my financial safety should I mention it again. Anyway, thanks Don for your $25 contribution to Rotary International. And to you Andre for fining me . . . thanks a lot!

Just for Interest: Do you like to keep score? I do in many areas and in this case, it's keeping score on where we stand in the world of Rotary International. With 34,000 clubs worldwide, Rochester Rotary is # 31 as listed by size of membership. Our "official" membership as of July 2012 was 326. We actually have just over 350 members when including our Honorary Members. And please, be very proud about our being #31. Most of these very large clubs do not have 17 other Rotary clubs in their backyards competing for members. Here are the top 10 clubs in the world and their memberships.

- Seattle 583

| District 7120 Annual Golf Tournament | |
The District golf tournament is being held on Sept. 14th at the Lima Country Club. We will be having a shotgun start at 1 PM on the Island Oaks course. The cost is the same as it has been for the past 7 years, $75. This includes the golf, cart and dinner. Once again a drawing will be held for any club that sends at least four golfers to the tournament for a Paul Harris recognition. The golfers don't just have to be Rotarians they can be family members or potential Rotarians. Each club is being asked to bring a door prize with a value of $25 or more. Remember that this door prize can be won by someone from anywhere within the District so please make sure it is something that they can use. If your club isn't sending a team please send along a door prize or send a check to me, made out to District 7120, and send to: Bill Redden PO Box 497 Lima, NY 14485 and I'll purchase a door prize for your club.
