President John's Journal

At the meeting on the 14th, we had a great crowd and an excellent presentation on Rotary's newly formed partnership with Habitat for Humanity. All Monroe County Rotary Clubs are now cooperating to build a Rotary House that will be fully handicapped accessible. Monroe Muffler/Brake is raising money through each one of its county stores to financially support our effort. Teresa Bianchi from Habitat and Mike Sofia from the Greece Rotary Club made a case that was music to our ears. The children of Habitat Owners have a 98% graduation rate from high school and Habitat neighborhoods become supportive, low crime, hard working centers of a quality lifestyle. By the way, Mike Sofia is the Immediate Past President of the Greece Club and the President Elect of the Camp Haccamo Board. In his spare time he is also the General Manager of Doan Buick-GMC. Truly a very nice man and a dedicated Rotarian! When you meet him . . .thank him!

The Tootsie Roll Bright Spot this week was awarded to Rotarian Brad Pearson. Brad is the Director of Advancement for the Mary Cariola Children's Center, and currently the acting Agency Director while a search committee seeks a permanent Director. He lives in Victor, has a wonderful young family, and even with all that on his plate, he founded a Little League Baseball Team for children with disabilities. Please make an effort to meet him! He is a fairly new member and has joined the Community Service Teams Committee headed up by President Elect Bob Attardo.   Brad took a mega handful of Tootsie Rolls when recognized, so if you have a craving, ask him to share!

Can we spend a minute talking about attendance at the Tuesday Luncheon Forums? I know that Rochester Rotary's Charter as Club # 36 pre-dates the requirement for attendance at all meetings, but that should not give us license to be cavalier about our commitment. Rotarian and Past Executive Director Bob Enright made the insightful remark recently that many of us wake up on a given Tuesday morning and decide whether or not to attend the luncheon. We base our decision to attend on conflicts, convenience, or program. I'd like us all to change that process of decision making by 1. How about we change our process of deciding from whether or not "Will I?" attend to why "Can I Not?" attend?

I'm not looking for perfect attendance. I'm simply asking that Rotary Lunch on Tuesday becomes a priority, subject to any emergency or important personal or professional event that takes precedent. We need to make a conscious decision NOT to attend, not a casual decision TO attend.

Here is a simple yet powerful way to put this in to practice. In whatever electronic calendaring system you use, enter Rotary Luncheon Meeting as a "recurring event" for every Tuesday. Set this criteria for the next 12 months. Then, when someone calls you for lunch and suggests "two weeks from Tuesday", you will check your calendar and make a conscious decision as to whether the request is more important than the Fellowship, Friendship, Networking and Learning you will experience at Rotary. You can decide either way, no problem! I just think we all need a reminder in our calendars that we have already made a commitment. Hoping to see you at lunch!

Guelph Rotary Club Tournament

On Wednesday, September 26, we will play our 11th annual golf tournament against the Guelph Rotary Club in Niagara Falls, Canada at the Niagara Parks Whirlpool Golf Course.  Any Rotarian is welcome to play.  The competition is a two person, better ball format (two Rochester Rotarians against two Guelph Rotarians with 100 % handicap.)  Don't have a handicap?

We'll create one for you.  Don't have a partner?  This is the way to meet another Rochester Rotarian, and we'll match you up!

This is a fellowship event, not a fund raiser.  It is followed by an adult beverage or two, a great dinner, and home by 8-8:30. The total cost is around $100.00, and the fellowship is great!!  I guarantee you'll enjoy yourself, no matter how you play!

Interested, or interested in finding out more about it?  Give me a call at 586-9228 or e-mail me at [email protected]

The event will be held on Monday, September 10, 2012, at the Rochester Public Market. We need 10 to 15 Rochester Rotarians to volunteer from 5:00 to 9:30 p.m. Family, friends and guests also are welcome (minimum age is 8 years old / Foodlink prefers 16 and up). Volunteers can expect to sell and collect tickets at entrances, hand out bags containing plates and cups, or act as "runners" to keep 100 vendors stocked with food, beverages and ice. Please contact Bob Attardo at 987-2884 for more information and to volunteer.
