What's Going On Around District 7120? | |
Once again this year we will be holding our annual Rochester Red Wings Rotary Night, complete with the family picnic. This year's game will be Saturday, August 18, 2012 @ 7:05pm and will include post-game fireworks.
As has been practice in the past, $1.00 from each ticket will go to the District 7120 Literacy Committee to help promote literacy within Rotary District 7120. We will also be collecting new or gently used children's books for distribution to schools in need within Rotary District 7120. These books can be dropped off at the 50/50 table located in the main breezeway.
One thing that is new this year is that we are offering Rotary Clubs or individual Rotarians the opportunity to reach out to those less fortunate in the community by becoming a member of the Big Hitters Club. For $115 through the Big Hitters Club you can purchase a block of 20 tickets so that those less fortunate can come and enjoy a Red Wings Game. For some of these kids it may be the only way that they get that opportunity, and what a great way to get the name of Rotary out in the community.
The order form for tickets as well as the application for the Big Hitters Club are available on the Rotary District 7120 home page. If you have any questions or would like me to send you a form directly please feel free to contact me. Email: mwyse@rochester.rr.com or home phone: 315-524-7561.
Hope to see you at the game,
PDG Mark Wyse

Rotary and Habitat Building a Partnership
| |
Join us on Tuesday, August 14th at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center where we will be joined by Teresa Bianchi from Flower City Habitat for Humanity and Michael Sofia the Immediate Past President of Greece Rotary Club and General Manager of Doan Buick.
Teresa oversees fundraising and donor recognition, as well as Habitat's communication and public relations efforts. Teresa has worked with various non-profit organizations in the Rochester area including the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Eastman Dental Center and Rochester Rehabilitation Center. While employed by Telecomp, Teresa has assisted in the development efforts of Northwestern University, Interlochen Center for the Arts, New York Presbyterian and Princeton HealthCare System. Besides her obvious love for non-profit work, Teresa's greatest accomplishment is staying sane while raising her three teenage
children. Michael Sofia will be coordinating all of the Rotary Clubs in Monroe County who will be working with Flower City Habitat for Humanity to build the Rotary House. This house will be fully accessible to people with all disabilities. |

THE BILLS - UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL! It was amazing. Thanks to the negotiating skills of Tracey Dreisbach and Heather Rossi, Monday's meeting at Bills Camp was held right in the end zone of Growney Stadium. We were about two yards away from being right on the field and it felt like you could reach right out and touch the helmets of the multi-million dollar stars that are the hopes for a successful season. A little banter with the players, a few autographs, the awesome size and condition of these guys, and the fellowship of Rochester Rotarians all made for a great day. Just how close to the action were we? Well, our very own Camp Director Brandi Koch, all 5' of her, actually caught a field goal kicked by Rian Lindell as it arched over the goal posts. Go Bills! Go Brandi!

If you happen to be around the office this week and see a little sadness on the faces of Tracey, Heather, Linda and Brandi, it's because this Friday the 10th is Elena Rebholz's last day with us as our summer intern. In a word, she has been fantastic! In two words, she has been a dream intern! This has been her second summer with us and she has been a dive right in, can do-will do, I'm on it, what else can I do, trust me with this kind of person whom we all seek to work with. Elena is a terrific example of a fine young woman who values a strong work ethic and service above self. She will be sorely missed, and we wish her well as she returns to Northeastern University. She will be continuing her studies with the goal of becoming a physical therapist. If you get a chance, drop a note of appreciation to Elena@rochesterrotary.org.

Aren't the Olympics wonderful? I love watching them, and getting caught up in the emotions of win, lose, effort, skill, personality, and national pride. And you know what? In many ways the Olympics mirror our lives as members of Rochester Rotary. Think of the comparisons.
- We all proudly wear the medal that we have earned - our Gold Medal!
- Some events capture our interest - others do not.
- We can't be skilled at everything, so we choose where we spend our time and energy.
- We cherish the relationships with our teammates.
- We are continuously learning and seeking to do better.
- We take great pride in representing the finest "country" in the world - Rotary!
I sometimes hear the remark that "Rochester Rotary has so much going on and I just can't do everything". If you ever feel this way, think of the Olympics. You are not expected to compete in every event. Pick your spots, make your one degree of difference, and then dive in like an Olympian!

Group Study Exchange 2012 - May 20-24
| |
The International Committee co-chaired by Carl Krause and Don Cameron together with host families Scott Anthony, Andre Godfrey, Mary Lewis Consler, Millie Reynolds and assisted by Lila Ford had a busy week last May when the GSE team traveled from the Philippians to District 7120 for the month. We were the third club in their rotation, joining us immediately after the District Convention.
The Team Leader was Eric Rodriguez, president of Agerico Export Corp. The Godfreys were his host. The Camerons hosted Cindy Wong David, MD. She is a pediatrician. Edwin Conception, an attorney, was hosted by the Krauses. Ma Cielo Sarion, a social worker, was co-hosted by Mary Consler in the evening and Millie Reynolds during the day. Annabelle Sim, a college professor, was hosted by the Anthonys.
We got off to an enthusiastic start the Sunday they joined us. Andre hosted lunch at Midvale Golf Club . It gave us all a chance to meet and greet everyone. The rest of the day was spent with the various families. Cindy joined us at a family college graduation party.
Monday was dedicated to the various vocational venues. Cindy spent the afternoon at Golisano Children's Hospital. Edwin met and spent time with Judge Winslow both in chambers and court. Ma went to the Jordon Health Center. Annabelle visited the counselors at Webster High and also Eastridge High. Eric spent the day at Entre Computers. That evening everyone joined the host couples at the Cameron's house for a cook-out. Lisa Norwood rode her bike down and joined us too.
Tuesday was Rotary day. The group started out at School 8. The students learned what it was like for a student living in the Philippines. They found out that they have it pretty good here in Rochester. Next was the Club meeting at Frontier Stadium for the ball game and a hotdog. Club banners were exchanged there. Sunshine Camp was next on the agenda. They were impressed in spite of the rain they endured. After a busy day, the relaxing evening was appreciated.
Wednesday morning at 7:15 the team were guests at the North/West Rotary Club who meets at the Charles Settlement House. Cindy was the spokesperson for the team. Everyone enjoyed her presentation. The rest of the day was spent at vocational sires. Cindy went to RGH and spent time touring the hospital and visiting with Cindy Christi, MD another pediatrician and infectious disease specialist. The afternoon, everyone toured the University of Rochester.
Thursday morning everyone said their goodbyes and were transferred to the Waterloo Club. It was an exciting week. They were so impressed with all the Americans they met. We learned about a new and different part of the world. It was a pleasure being their friends for four days.
I personally would like to thank all involved, Andre, Carl, Scott, Mary, Millie, Lila and Lisa.
Don Cameron
