What's Going On Around District 7120?

Once again this year we will be holding our annual Rochester Red Wings Rotary Night, complete with the family picnic. This year's game will be Saturday, August 18, 2012 @ 7:05pm and will include post-game fireworks.

As has been practice in the past, $1.00 from each ticket will go to the District 7120 Literacy Committee to help promote literacy within Rotary District 7120. We will also be collecting new or gently used children's books for distribution to schools in need within Rotary District 7120. These books can be dropped off at the 50/50 table located in the main breezeway.

One thing that is new this year is that we are offering Rotary Clubs or individual Rotarians the opportunity to reach out to those less fortunate in the community by becoming a member of the Big Hitters Club. For $115 through the Big Hitters Club you can purchase a block of 20 tickets so that those less fortunate can come and enjoy a Red Wings Game. For some of these kids it may be the only way that they get that opportunity, and what a great way to get the name of Rotary out in the community.

The order form for tickets as well as the application for the Big Hitters Club are available on the Rotary District 7120 home page. If you have any questions or would like me to send you a form directly please feel free to contact me. Email: mwyse@rochester.rr.com or home phone: 315-524-7561.

Hope to see you at the game,

President John's Journal

Yesterday's meeting was superb!  Dr. Brad Burke and Mark Clement presented a fact filled review of the impact on our community's health care under the Affordable Care Act, and outlined several significant changes in the delivery of health care that we can expect.  What a treat to have both of these extraordinary professionals at our podium and speaking to a full house!  Special thanks to Program Chair Bob Witmer for putting this together for us.

=============

I recently read an article that examined the power of various forms of communication.  And the winner was . . .here in the year 2012 . . .a personal note.  It didn't matter that the note was hand written or typed, it just needed to be personal and signed by you.  Not an email, not a tweet, not just a verbal comment, but an actual physical note.  The impression for the receiver is that in this fast paced overworked life you took the time and effort to actually sit down and write a note.  Wow!

Please understand, I am a big fan of email for all the normal day-to-day communications that need to be sent, replied to, shared with others; we all know the reasons.  But when the occasion deserves special attention, think about sending a personal note.

This year, when we at Rotary know that a member cannot make it to a meeting because of illness or tragedy or whatever, we will place a "Thinking of You" card on each luncheon table.  There is plenty of room on the card for each of us to write and sign a quick note of care and concern.  Rotary is all about friendship and fellowship and concern for others and this simple momentary act to let others know we are "Thinking of you" is powerful reinforcement to the basic principles of being a Rotarian.  And as you already know, it is a win-win because it will lift your spirits having sent the note to a friend.

Does this really have an impact?  Well, three weeks ago we had cards on the tables for Past President Dr. Barry Culhane who is recovering from shoulder surgery.  Last Friday I received a FULL PAGE LETTER from Barry telling how all the notes warmed his heart and lifted his spirits.  It gave him pause to reflect on the many years and the numerous friends and the vast achievements that have enriched his life through Rochester Rotary.  What a wonderful testimony to the power of a simple note.  Thanks Barry!

ACTION REQUESTED:  If you or someone you know is ill, hospitalized, grieving, recovering, or needing a lift, please call or email Linda Garland in the Rotary Office and let her know.  It does make a difference to both the sender and receiver if we can simply send a note.

This week's Tootsie Roll Bright Spot shines on Rotarian Peter Sarratori.  If you see  him, thank him for his Service above Self and his unbelievable commitment to Rotary and the Sunshine Campus.  He might not have any Tootsie Rolls in his pocket, but he will take anyone at any time on a tour of the Campus and share his passion for how Rochester Rotary serves children and young adults with disabilities.  Great work Pete!

President John's Welcome Reception

We hope you will join us Thursday August 9th at Locust Hill Country Club for President John's Welcome Reception starting at 4:30pm.

The cost is $19 per person - please RSVP to Elena Rebholz at 585-546-7435 x260 or elena@rochesterrotary.org.

Sunshine Camp a Success!

Sunshine Camp was a success! Thank you to everyone who came and showed their support at Carnival and Peter's Pals Putt Putt.  The campers enjoyed great weather, fun and met some new friends.

Below is a quote from a camper's mother about her son's first experience at Sunshine Camp

"I would like to thank you so very much for giving my son Austin Champion a week to remember for the rest of his life. We are very grateful for all of you giving him such a wonderful opportunity to have so many great experiences, make new friends and see that everybody is different. I wish that I would have known about this camp many years ago, he has missed out all those years.

We were so pleased with everything about this camp, including all of the staff. The video was amazing and very heart felt, and the organization was unremarkable.

All of you are very, very special people to do what you do. Austin already cannot wait till next year! This was the first time that Austin ever spent a night, let alone 5 days away from our home and family. He did very well because of the caring, loving and educated staff and the other children who were there.

Thank you again for your time and big hearts!! He will see you next year with open arms! Keep up the great work and we will look forward to seeing all of you next summer!"

Group Study Exchange 2012 - May 20-24

The International Committee co-chaired by Carl Krause and Don Cameron together with host families Scott Anthony, Andre Godfrey, Mary Lewis Consler, Millie Reynolds and assisted by Lila Ford had a busy week last May when the GSE team traveled from the Philippians to District 7120 for the month. We were the third club in their rotation, joining us immediately after the District Convention.

The Team Leader was Eric Rodriguez, president of Agerico Export Corp. The Godfreys were his host. The Camerons hosted Cindy Wong David, MD. She is a pediatrician. Edwin Conception, an attorney, was hosted by the Krauses. Ma Cielo Sarion, a social worker, was co-hosted by Mary Consler in the evening and Millie Reynolds during the day. Annabelle Sim, a college professor, was hosted by the Anthonys.

We got off to an enthusiastic start the Sunday they joined us. Andre hosted lunch at Midvale Golf Club . It gave us all a chance to meet and greet everyone. The rest of the day was spent with the various families. Cindy joined us at a family college graduation party.

Monday was dedicated to the various vocational venues. Cindy spent the afternoon at Golisano Children's Hospital. Edwin met and spent time with Judge Winslow both in chambers and court. Ma went to the Jordon Health Center. Annabelle visited the counselors at Webster High and also Eastridge High. Eric spent the day at Entre Computers. That evening everyone joined the host couples at the Cameron's house for a cook-out. Lisa Norwood rode her bike down and joined us too.

Tuesday was Rotary day. The group started out at School 8. The students learned what it was like for a student living in the Philippines. They found out that they have it pretty good here in Rochester. Next was the Club meeting at Frontier Stadium for the ball game and a hotdog. Club banners were exchanged there. Sunshine Camp was next on the agenda. They were impressed in spite of the rain they endured. After a busy day, the relaxing evening was appreciated.

Wednesday morning at 7:15 the team were guests at the North/West Rotary Club who meets at the Charles Settlement House. Cindy was the spokesperson for the team. Everyone enjoyed her presentation. The rest of the day was spent at vocational sires. Cindy went to RGH and spent time touring the hospital and visiting with Cindy Christi, MD another pediatrician and infectious disease specialist. The afternoon, everyone toured the University of Rochester.

Thursday morning everyone said their goodbyes and were transferred to the Waterloo Club. It was an exciting week. They were so impressed with all the Americans they met. We learned about a new and different part of the world. It was a pleasure being their friends for four days.

I personally would like to thank all involved, Andre, Carl, Scott, Mary, Millie, Lila and Lisa.
