What's Going On Around District 7120?

Once again this year we will be holding our annual Rochester Red Wings Rotary Night, complete with the family picnic. This year's game will be Saturday, August 18, 2012 @ 7:05pm and will include post-game fireworks.

As has been practice in the past, $1.00 from each ticket will go to the District 7120 Literacy Committee to help promote literacy within Rotary District 7120. We will also be collecting new or gently used children's books for distribution to schools in need within Rotary District 7120. These books can be dropped off at the 50/50 table located in the main breezeway.

One thing that is new this year is that we are offering Rotary Clubs or individual Rotarians the opportunity to reach out to those less fortunate in the community by becoming a member of the Big Hitters Club. For $115 through the Big Hitters Club you can purchase a block of 20 tickets so that those less fortunate can come and enjoy a Red Wings Game. For some of these kids it may be the only way that they get that opportunity, and what a great way to get the name of Rotary out in the community.

The order form for tickets as well as the application for the Big Hitters Club are available on the Rotary District 7120 home page. If you have any questions or would like me to send you a form directly please feel free to contact me. Email: [email protected] or home phone: 315-524-7561.

Hope to see you at the game,

President John's Journal

I want to say a few things about the wearing of our Rotary Pins.  If we think about it, it is somewhat humorous that we all take special care to wear our pins to Rotary Meetings, where we encounter everyone who already knows that we are a Rotarian.  As an organization that is seeking new members and higher levels of community recognition, wouldn't it make  more sense to proudly wear our pins in the conduct of our daily lives both professionally and socially?  Recently, Rotarian Tom Parrish wore his pin to a Young Professionals networking event and 3 people asked about his membership, what we do, and how they might become involved.  Beyond asking, they actually gave him all of their contact information and requested that we send them out some info on the club and its activities!  Does it get any better than that?

The Rotary Pin is a badge of honor that you have earned.  Here are my top 5 reasons to wear it proudly everywhere you go:

  1. It symbolizes your financial and time commitment to Service Above Self.
  2. It shines brightly to identify you as a person of Character.
  3. It sparks the opportunity to tell others about the Sunshine Campus and School #8.
  4. It honors all those in the world who see Rotary as a Life Saver and a Life Changer.
  5. It rings out as an invitation to "Come Join Us".

And here is my "deal" for the coming year.  You will never be fined or called out when forgetting to wear your pin to a Rotary Meeting.  However, I want you  to consider changing your commitment to wear the pin outside of Rotary by 1 this year.   Over the journey of our 101st year, this alone can change the recognition you deserve, and the community awareness Rochester Rotary needs . . . by more than a mile.

Women of Rotary at Sunshine Camp

Look for white flowers the next time you visit the Sunshine Campus. The Women of Rotary Camp Committee planted the gardens, tubs, and boxes (Tuscarora cabin and the Camera Coop) using white flowers in honor of President John White!

In 2007 the committee chose pink flowers to honor President Ken Pink... and in 2008 burgundy red colored flowers were planted in honor of President Sam Merlo.

Take a walk to the Haccamo Train Station and admire the beautiful landscaping. The WOR Garden is in front of the platform. The Suburban Rotary Clubs have created their own special areas around the station and are identified by unique engraved stone markers.
