What's Going On Around District 7120? | |
District 7120 is on Facebook!
The District 7120 Facebook page provides information about the latest Rotary news and events and is a forum for all of our 69 clubs to talk with each other.
Once again this year we will be holding our annual Rochester Red Wings Rotary Night complete with the family picnic. This year's game will be Saturday, August 18, 2012 @ 7:05pm and will include post game fireworks.
As has been the practice in the past, $1.00 from each ticket will go to the District 7120 Literacy Committee to help promote literacy within Rotary District 7120. We will also be collecting new or gently used children's books for distribution to schools in need within Rotary District 7120. These books can be dropped off at the 50/50 table located in the main breezeway.
One thing that is new this year is that we are offering Rotary Clubs or individual Rotarians the opportunity to reach out to those less fortunate in the community by becoming a member of the Big Hitters Club. For $115 through the Big Hitters Club you can purchase a block of 20 tickets so that those less fortunate can come and enjoy a Red Wings Game. For some of these kids it may be the only way that they get that opportunity, and what a great way to get the name of Rotary out in the community.
The order form for tickets as well as the application for the Big Hitters Club are available on the Rotary District 7120 home page. If you have any questions or would like me to send you a form directly please feel free to contact me. Email: mwyse@rochester.rr.com or home phone: 315-524-7561.
Hope to see you at the game,
PDG Mark Wyse

President John's Journal

This week's meeting was a true honor for me as I took the reigns as your President for the coming year. Your words and deeds of support were heartwarming and so very much appreciated. I want to especially thank the Bow Tie Brigade and state that you looked
"mah-vah-las". And, congratulations to Mary Lewis-Consler for being awarded the first "Tootsie Roll Bright Spot" honor. Her work as leader of the Membership Committee is deserving of all the recognition we can give her.
-------------
As a reminder to all who attended the first meeting of our Second Century of Service and to update those who could not, I outlined my plans to do a few things differently this year. The context of these initiatives is that small changes can make a world of difference over time. I introduced my plans by stating that in navigation, a 1 degree change in course over a 101 mile journey would result in more than a mile's worth of difference at our destination. The 101 comes from the fact that this 2012-2013 year is the 101st year of Rochester Rotary. I am asking all Rotarians to make a 1° difference in your personal Rotary engagement, and this Club will be a mile ahead of where we are now at the end of the year.
Here are the highlights of my plans:
- Peace Through Service - this is our Rotary International theme for the year and our local programs and projects will support this in every way we can.
- 4-Way Test Emphasis - the 4-Way Test is the fundamental moral and ethical code upon which Rotary was founded and provides all of us a standard of common ground. This will be highlighted at every meeting and hopefully be a part of every engagement.
- Community Service Teams - I have asked President-Elect Bob Attardo to lead this effort in which teams of Rochester Rotarians will volunteer for one day of service to a local organization that serves our community. Two examples of worthy organizations Bob is working on are Volunteers of America (Rotarian JoAnne Ryan is the CEO), and InterVol (Rotary Award winner Dr. Ralph Pennino is the CEO).
- International Service Project - Rochester Rotary is putting together plans to organize a Service Project in conjunction with InterVol and the Belize Rotary Club.
- Bright Spot Nominees - At the end of each weekly newscast Don Alhart will shine a bright spot on someone who has recently been an example of Service Above Self. A new "Tootsie Role Club" will support this process by pledging $2 per week and includes benefits too numerous to mention here. Standby for more news on this!
- Thinking of You cards - Each week at each luncheon table we will have special cards available with the names of those who need the support and the thoughts of fellow Rotarians. This week we sent cards to Barry Culhane who is recovering from shoulder surgery and Bob Buckpitt who's arthritis and cancer do not allow him to come to meetings. PLEASE - if you find at any time that someone is ill or needs a lift to their spirits call the Rotary office and let us know.
- Fines and Recognitions - This is an entirely new process! The maximum fine is now $25 and the money will go to The Rotary Foundation. Upon payment, you will get individual credit at RI towards earning a Paul Harris Fellowship. And, your receipt for paying your fine from Sgt. At Arms Greg Kausch will be a 4-Way Test Coin.
-------------
Please join with the members of our Board, all committee chairs, the office staff and me to change the course of Rochester Rotary by only 1 degree and we can be more than a mile ahead at the finish line of year 101.

| | Peter's Pals Putt Putt Invitational and Ice Cream Social -
Wednesday, July 25th (at the Sunshine Campus)
We would like to invite Rotarians, Friends and Family back out to the Sunshine Campus for the annual Peter's Pals Putt-Putt Invitational. This Putt-Putt tournament with our Campers is held as part of our larger Peter D. Formicola Sunshine Camp Golf Invitational
The evening will begin with a dedication of a granite plaque, at 5:45pm in honor of Peter that was auctioned off at last year's Golf Tournament. The Putt-Putt Tournament would kick off at 6pm with 18 camper teams each to be paired with a Rotarian! Our top 5 teams will win an award.
The game will be followed by an ice cream social and some carnival games and music.

If you are interested in volunteering to help with the ice cream social or putting with the campers, please contact Heather Rossi in the Rotary Office at hrossi@rochesterrotary.org or 546-7435 x204. Those who are interested in attending and cheering on our teams are MORE than welcome as well!
