In my opinion, COSTING in PrintSmith has been perfected and all owners should utilize this valuable feature. Once COSTING is set up (properly) then the estimators and owners can see what their (gross) profit is on each job. This is valuable inorder to know how to price jobs and also it shows if you are charging enough for a particular charge.
One of my functions during a visit is to set up costing. Many times, I will set up costing on a charge (like cutting) and determine that it "COSTS" .75 cents (or more) each time the knife comes down, and the owner is charging only 50 cents! Net LOSS per cut! This is very common in many of the charges.
Although I can give you advice on what to charge, I really set up your PrintSmith to show you what you are charging and what items need to be addressed (like cutting as per above). Many times my visit pays off in less than 3 months in monies saved or more monies being taken in from proper COSTING.
Also with COSTING set up properly, the owners can tell the estimators or sales reps that they can "discount" x amount, however their net profit must not be below Y %. This is clearly shown on the COSTING screen (see below). Also, using Report Writer, you (the owner) can see the profits of each invoice AND estimate on a daily/weekly basis.
