Message from the Editor
SWANA Northern Lights Chapter is all about leading by example. We sincerely appreciate that some of the best in the business serve on our Board, and that hundreds more participate as Chapter Members. But the times they are a changin'.
Though always regretful to see old friends exit, this inevitable change that every healthy organization experiences also creates opportunities for new players on the team, bringing with them fresh perspectives and unique talents to enhance the legacies left by leaders past.
We thank the following recently "retired" Directors for their dedication and support and wish them only the best in the future: Terry Rowley (AB), Chuck Smith (AB), Mike Latoski (SK) and Gord Marceca (SK).
In addition to welcoming new Directors John Deagle (AB), Susan Harty (SK), Bill Cummins (SK), Jacques Trudeau (MB), Tony Bowen (MB) and Garth Mitchell (MB), SWANA Northern Lights Chapter is very pleased to announce that Kelly Emke has joined our Chapter as Executive Director.
Prior to this position, Kelly worked with the City of Saskatoon as the Environmental Programs Manager. Kelly has a Bachelor of Science and studied environmental science and engineering technology at the University of British Columbia and the British Columbia Institute of Technology. Kelly has also worked in the field of environmental development in British Columbia and West Africa and enjoys working with communities to find sustainable solutions to protect our environment. Kelly is based in Sherwood Park, Alberta where she resides with her husband Sam and their two sons.
And without further adieu... |

Message from the Executive Director
I would like to take this opportunity to say hello and let you know how excited I am to be the Northern Lights Chapter's new Executive Director. I hope to have the opportunity to meet many of you in person in the near future through one of our Chapter's conferences, training courses, or other events.
Many exciting things are happening with the Chapter which you will learn more about in this first issue of our new electronic newsletter.
Among other initiatives, we are all working hard to get ready for SWANA's 5th Canadian Waste Symposium, the Summit for Sustainability, to be held at the Fairmont Banff Springs April 18 to 21, 2010. The symposium will feature a dynamic technical program as well as training opportunities. Be sure to mark your calendars as this is an event not to be missed!
We are working towards updating our website to provide valuable information to our members and alert you of opportunities and new developments in the industry. Providing training for our members and waste industry professionals remains a focus for the Chapter and we look forward to debuting new courses in the coming months.
I would be pleased to hear from you and welcome any comments or suggestions on how the Chapter can support you as waste management professionals. I can be reached at kelly.emke@swananorthernlights.org. Have a great fall season! Kelly Emke |

Shining the Northern Lights on...
SWANA NLC Trainer Profile: Ian Broome Vital Stats:
- Born in Brooks, AB in 1961
- Moved to Brandon, MB as a boy, where father started a construction company
- Family - wife Marianne; sons Connor, Josh and Landon
- Employed with City of Brandon since 1982
- SWANA Member
- Accredited as a SWANA NLC Trainer in 2008
From taking the helm of the family business at the tender age of 17 due to his father's heart attack to being a hands-on dad to 3 young sons (including twins), Ian Broome is well known as someone who rises to a challenge and does so to the highest standard.
This personal philosophy would also be tested many times in Broome's professional life with the City of Brandon, which began when a quote on an earth-moving job led to a job offer in return and recently culminated in a move into management as Director of Public Works.
But Broome was just a young charge-hand when first introduced to SWANA through mentor Wayne Kingdon, now retired after many years' service as City of Brandon Sanitation Director. Kingdon was himself a long-time SWANA Member and Manitoba Director of the Canadian Prairie Chapter (CPC), as the Northern Lights Chapter (NLC) was formerly known. It was Kingdon's vision that established Brandon as a model for responsibility and innovation in municipal waste management.
Upon Kingdon's exit from the City in 2004, Broome was nominated to represent Manitoba at the Chapter Board level in acknowledgement of his commitment to sustaining the respective roles of Brandon and SWANA as industry-leading ambassadors.
As SWANA CPC expanded to include the Northwest Territories in 2007-08, hence its re-naming as Northern Lights Chapter, the need for new Executive Officers and trainers mirrored this growth. Once again Broome answered the call, now in his second year as Chapter Vice-President as well as earning accreditation as a SWANA NLC Trainer.
"You might say it's been a paper-to-paper rise in the ranks for me," Broome said. "I've gone from picking it as a labourer to now pushing it as a manager. But to this day I respect that labourer just as much as the elite operator and that's my philosophy as a Trainer. Wayne cared so much for the environment and I credit him for teaching me that honesty and respect is how you build a great team."
