Racine Montessori School is part of a global community that guides the whole child toward a life-long love of learning. Support "Relay For Life"
Know someone who has been affected by cancer? Of course you do. It's not too late to support RMS' Relay for Life team!  Either join us in the relay or pledge a donation.  It's at Case High School starting at 6:00 p.m. on June 11  and ending at 10:00 a.m. on June 12. (You don't have to walk the entire time!)

It's a fun time for a great cause.

Your Throw-aways = $$
For RMS

Please keep in mind that RMS earns money toward its fundraising budget (which helps cover operating expenses) on items that would normally end up in the garbage:
Please keep these items coming in!  Every little bit matters.

The Easy Ones
Lest you forget, please keep RMS in mind in these other (mindless!) ways:
  • Earn rebates for RMS through Roundy's/Pick 'N Save's We Care program by designating us as your non-profit "beneficiary" when grocery shopping with your Advantage card.
  • Use your Red Card at Target and earn money through their Take Charge of Education program.

Here Comes the Sun, do-di-do-do
We're well on our way and it's pretty exciting!  The guys from H&H Solar have begun the installation.  If all goes as planned, the work should be complete around the end of the month.  72 panels are being installed on the pole barn roof and 8 panels above the big door.  One  additional panel will be installed between the 1st & 2nd floors of the school building which will run fans being installed at the south end of each hallway so the children will be able to see for themselves that when the sun shines, the fans will spin! Take a walk back to the pole barn for a close-up view of the installation as it's happening.

A Few Spots Left

Seven days of school left and we still have a few spots left for summer school in our primary and  elementary levels.

Diane Kelly and Nicole Fuentes will be sharing the five weeks of Primary, assisted by Debbe Burdick.  Diane will teach on Mondays and Wednesdays and Nicole on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  They will rotate on Fridays.  Debbe will be assisting for the entire five weeks.  In the Elementary, Cara Lewis will teach the first two weeks (June 21 and June 28) and Melissa Winklebleck will teach the last three weeks  (July 12, July 19 and July 26).  There is no summer session during the week of July 5.

The cost for summer sessions are $75 per week from 8:30 until 11:30. a.m.    Our Child Care Program will be available after the summer school sessions each day, from 11:30 until 5:00 p.m.  No deposit is required, but we do ask you to sign a contract to hold your child's space in class.  You will see the billing for summer school on your August statement. Join us for a very informational and exciting summer of learning all about our wonderful state of Wisconsin!

In the News...
Environmental Stewardship
Thanks to Racine Montessori's continued commitment to environmental stewardship by way of installing a solar electric system at the school, tonight RMS will receive the Southeast Gateway Group of the Sierra Club Green Award. For those not already aware, we already have several existing examples of environmental care and awareness, all of which are tightly woven into our Montessori curriculum and culture: a Nature Center with fruit trees, an herb garden and a labyrinth (and soon to have large seating boulders arranged in a circle to complement our outdoor classroom); a rain garden; a greenhouse; Adolescent students producing rain collection barrels for sale.

Solar Celebration
Yesterday, we had a Solar Celebration to mark the commencement of the installation (think lots of kids wearing yellow and singing songs about the sun!).  Also present were our four very generous benefactors, Charles  & Kathryn Heide and Clif & (our very own) Gladys Peterson who are paying the out-of-pocket costs not covered by any WE Energies rebates or grants.  If you are so inclined, Rita will happily deliver thank you notes for the Heide's and the Peterson's.

Warm Congratulations to Rita Lewis
Join us in congratulating Rita Lewis who, along with other educators and administrators, will be honored by the Phi Delta Kappa Honor Society of Educators on Sunday, May 23, at a banquet at Meadow Brook Country Club.  Of course, we all know how awesome Rita is and how much of herself she gives to our school and our children. Despite her humble nature (she has, by now, turned six shades of red!), we are thrilled at this very much deserved recognition.

Goings On
Spring Plant Sale-Tomorrow!
The southwest corner of our school yard will be in bloom tomorrow as CJ's will deliver a truckload of beautiful hanging baskets and flats of annuals!  Plan to make your purchases at RMS for your Memorial Day planting!   Thanks to Cindy Westman, Darlene Feldpausch, Cathy Ulrich and Jennifer McClendon for volunteering to help us out with the sale during the day.

Last Meadow Soup Lunch of the Year
The Meadow will be preparing and serving its final Soup Lunch of the year next Wednesday, May 26, for interested students, staff and teachers.  On the menu will be chicken tortellini soup, fruit kabobs and homemade soft pretzels.  Yummm!  Make sure to submit your order and payment soon. The "share" proceeds  from this month's lunch will benefit the American Cancer Society

Annual Spring Musical
Join us on Thursday, May 27, at 6 p.m. in the Pole Barn as our Elementary students entertain us with a half-hour songfest.  Please bring your own chairs, if you have them.  A free will offering will be accepted.

Family Fun Run & Walk--It's Not Too Late
Join us for RACINEkids.com's First Annual Family Fun Run & Walk on Saturday, May 29, 2010, at 10:00 a.m.

The 3k & 7k Run/Walk will start at Colonial Park, 2300 West High St., and travel along the Root River Parkway. Parking will be available at Gilmore Middle School and the RUSD building. For routes & details, see RACINEkids.com. Registration fees are $15/individual or $35/family of four.

This is a great way to meet up with other RMS families, do something healthy with your kids and raise money for our school! RMS will receive a portion of any pledges you collect. Sign-up by May 14 and receive a free t-shirt & water bottle!
  • Return registration forms to the school.
  • Pledge sheets and pledges due in the office by 11:30 a.m. on Friday, May 28.
For questions, please contact Stacey Day Kocian.

Spring Conferences
Conference sign-up sheets are now available.  Sign up for your end-of-year conference either by stopping by the school office or giving us a call.  Conferences are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, June 1st and 2nd.

RMS Policy Reminder
Missing Library Books
Please help out our school library by searching high and low throughout your home, your car, grandma's house, etc., for any library books belonging to the school. We have an unusually high number of books missing and children who are claiming they can't find them!

If, after searching thoroughly you still can't find them, please consider making a cash donation to the school directed at "library replenishment".  We want to make sure our kids continue to have a great selection of reading materials from which to borrow, read and learn.

This Week's Health Tip
Summer Fun in Southeastern Wisconsin
As you are planning your children's summer schedule (in which we hope Summer School at RMS plays a role!), here's a list of camp activities and other events in the Racine/Kenosha area compiled by JustAddKidsOnline.net.

And, if you're o.k. with roadtripping, don't forget metro Milwaukee and its plethora of museums and lakefront activities.

Most important of all, please remember bike safety, pool & swimming safety, playground safety and healthy summer practices (like using kid-friendly sunscreen and mosquito repellent).

Did you know...
that solar energy is dependent upon nuclear power? Solar energy's nuclear power plant, though, is 93 million miles away.  The earth receives more energy from the sun in just one hour than the world uses in a whole year.
