Montessori Quote

"It is necessary, then, to give the child the possibility of developing according to the laws of his nature, so that he can become strong, and, having become strong, can do even more than we dared hope for him.

Montessori Spotlight

Maria Montessori said, "Success in life depends on self-confidence and the knowledge of one's own capacity and many-sided powers of adaptation."  A critical ingredient to a happy and productive life is self-confidence.  It is vital in every pursuit, from problem-solving to constructively engaging with others.  Montessori instills self-confidence by en-couraging independence and responsibility. With careful guidance and appropriate limitations, Montessori children are armed with decision-making authority over their own lives.  They mature, learn, and adapt to their surroundings by following their internal voices and gain confidence in their choices and actions. From an early age, they are asked to be re-sponsible for their actions, care for the environment, and to contribute to the school community.

In the News...
Enrollment for 2010-2011

Enrollment forms are coming to you by the end of this week.  We allow our current families the month of March to re-enroll for the fall.  In April, we fill any vacancies with names from our waiting list. The RMS Board of Directors worked long and hard on the budget for next year, trying to deal with increased costs of supplies and services and yet to keep our tuition costs as affordable as possible for our families.  As you will notice when you receive your enrollment forms, we have had to increase the fees in all areas, but we hope that you will feel that the education your child is receiving is well worth the extra dollars per month. Our child care program has operated with the same rates for several years, so this is another area that you will see an increase.  If you have questions or concerns, please give us a call or come in to talk - the door is always open.

Important: don't forget to enroll your younger child.  We give siblings first preference, but we DO need your child's birth date and other information.  If you need a registration form, please stop by the office or give us a call!

Used Book Update

From the Book Sale Committee in the Meadow:  "Thank you all who came to our book sale.  We got a total amount of $389.44.  As you should know, the money will go to Haiti.  Thank you to everyone who donated and bought the books.  Enjoy the books.  Thank you!  Book Sale Committee and the Haitians."

Nature's Classroom
All of our third level students and the lower elementary Montessori teachers are going on a very exciting trip to Nature's Classroom in Mukwonago.  This week-long experience will take place from Mon., March 8th through Fri., March 12th.  The students will participate in a residential outdoor school program, using the natural world, giving them a unique learning experience that can't take place inside a school building!  They will participate in ecosystem exploration and study and work together with their peers and teachers as a community.  This is an annual trip for our third level students, and they have an opportunity to experience another week at Nature's Classroom in the fall, as the Meadow (4th, 5th and 6th level students) visits this wonderful setting.

Focus On Fresh!

Will Allen of Milwaukee's Growing Power will be at Gifford Elementary School Tuesday, March 2 at 7 p.m. for a community screening of "Fresh-New Thinking About What We're Eating". Tickets are available at the RMS school office for $10 or at the door for $12 each. Proceeds from Focus on Fresh will go to benefit the mission and activities of Eat Right Racine.

RMS Colors Week

Each year before our Spring Open House, we celebrate RMS Color Week.  Our logo contains the primary colors of red, blue and yellow, and those are our school colors.  We pick one day of the week to wear each of the colors, and it's so much fun!  On Tues., March 9th, it's Blue Day, Wed., March 10th is Red Day, Thurs., March 11th is Yellow Day and Fri., March 12th is RMS Day.  We invite you to visit the RMS Montessori School Apparel Store to get ready for RMS Week.  Check it out at www.racinemontessori.com. You'll be able to choose from a variety of products including shirts, jackets, backpacks and more, all embroidered with the RMS logo.  You can pay online by credit card, PayPal or online check and have it delivered to school within 7-10 days.

Deposit Refunded in March!

Look for it on your March statement - the deposit that you paid when you enrolled your child for the 2009 - 2010 school year has been refunded!  You should notice a credit on your statement.

For Tax Purposes
The RMS federal I.D. number is 39-1024012, if you plan to claim the child care costs on your income tax.

Bookstore Online

Check out the newest offerings from our online bookstore, www.rmsbooktore.com.  Florence Parry Heide is our featured author, and we are very excited to announce that Florence will be with us during our Spring Open House!  We hope that you will plan to stop by and chat with her at that time.  She'll be delighted to sign copies of her books or just enjoy a conversation with you and your children.

Lakefront Artist Fair Volunteer Sign-Up

An email was sent last week regarding Volunteer Sign-Up for the Lakefront Artist Fair. Please contact the office to let us know which area you would like to work this year: set-up, registration, RMS info booth, artist shuttle, hospitality, prize board, ticket booth, silent auction, basket auction, plant/hanging basket sales, children's activity area, program distribution or clean-up.  Each shift lasts 2 - 3 hours.

We count on the help of all our families to ensure a successful, smooth running and fun-for-the-whole-family fair.

Extended Day Information Night

Each of the four primary classrooms will host their own Extended Day Information Evening, and parents should attend the meeting in their child's class this evening at 7:00.

RMS Policy Reminder
Classroom Cleaning Obligation
Thursday, March 11 at 5:30 p.m.

Successful school operations at RMS depend heavily on parent, guardian and extended family contributions of time and talent.

In addition to volunteering time and talents, each family is expected to participate in one classroom cleaning per child. There are three (3) cleaning dates each year from which to choose: one before school starts; one in the fall before Family Night; and one in the spring before Open House.   Failure to participate in your requisite cleaning day(s) will result in a $50 fee (per missed cleaning) assessed in May of the academic year.

Our last cleaning date of the school year will be on Thursday, March 11 at 5:30 p.m., just before our annual Open House.  Please plan to be there (with cleaning supplies in hand) in order to avoid the $50 missed cleaning fee.  (If you need help understanding what type of supplies to bring, please contact the office and we will be happy to provide ideas.)

This Week's Health Tip
Cold, Ice and Snow Safety
from KidsHealth.Org

Winter isn't a time to just stay indoors and wait for spring. There's a whole wonderland of sports out there for the entire family - sledding, snowmobiling, and snowboarding, to mention a few. Plus, someone has to shovel the snow, right?

Once outdoors, however, take precautions to keep your family safe. In ice and snow, accidents can occur easily, and before you know it you might be on your way to the emergency room.

It's easy to keep safe - and stay fit - during the cold months. By following a few tips, you can have a great time, no matter how much white stuff piles up outside.

Did you know...
...our annual Lakefront Artist Fair is the single largest fundraiser for RMS?  We average 125 artists each year and we need your help to ensure its success!  Sign up to volunteer today!
