Get Involved!
Lakefront Artist Fair Saturday, May 1, 2010, is the date of our 29th annual Lakefront Artist Fair and things are happening! Applications were sent out to close to 500 artists and we already have over a dozen responses. Letters were sent out to 29 "Friends", asking for donations of $29, and we are seeing a great response from that, too.
This week, the urgent need is for PRIZES for our raffle tickets. We are looking for five or six large prizes that will help us sell a lot of tickets! LAF Raffle tickets sell for $1 each or a book of six for $5. In the past, we have featured items such as a child's bicycle, an American Girls doll, jewelry, fine art or pottery, a time-share vacation, a set of cookware, etc. If you have anything you would like to donate, or if you have a connection with a business that would be willing to make a donation, please let us know as soon as possible. We will have the tickets printed at the beginning of March so we can start selling them prior to the Fair.
We are also looking for a graphic designer, or someone who can help us with signs. Maybe that's YOU!

Montessori Quote
"Movement, or physical activity, is thus an essential factor in intellectual growth, which depends upon the impressions received from outside. Through movement we come in contact with external reality, and it is through these contacts that we eventually acquire even abstract ideas."
From The Secret of Childhood Maria Montessori

Earthquake Relief
We at RMS are following the news of the recent earthquakes in Haiti with tremendous concern. Our hearts go out to all who have been affected. There is an AMS Montessori school in Port-au-Prince, La Casa Dei Bambini Montessori. The head of the school, Sabrina Vitiello Izaquirre, has reported that there were no children in the school at the time of the first earthquake; however, part of the school collapsed and only three of the nine teachers have been accounted for. The director also reported that an orphanage next to the school collapsed as well and currently, all 350 children are sleeping on the street.
We can't even begin to imagine the horror and confusion for these little children. It is truly heartbreaking. Here at RMS, we are offering a few simple opportunities for you to support in the Haiti relief efforts:
1) As you know, our Meadow students planned a soup lunch for this week, from which the "Share" portion of the proceeds will go to Haiti relief. 2) The Meadow students will also conduct a Children's Used Book Sale during our Winter Conference days (Thursday & Friday, February 18 & 19). 3) The Girl Scouts are planning a bake sale during our spring Open House. 4) We have a collection can in the school office for donations.
All of the money collected will be sent to UNICEF for the Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund.

Save the Date! Many of you have been asking and, yes, we ARE having a Wine Tasting event this year! Please save the date - Friday, March 26th - and we'll get more information to you as soon as details are finalized. Jane and Dave Clope are again overseeing this enjoyable event. If you've ever been to an RMS Wine Tasting in the past, you know about Jane's excellent and abundant food! It is amazing! More information soon...
Montessori Spotlight Movement is a core tenet of Dr. Maria Montessori's philosophy:
"Only by action can the child learn." She considered her ideas about
movement to be an important educational reform, noting that, "Activity
has hitherto been the special competence of the teacher, but in our
system it is left mainly to the child."
Through her observations, she
defined the sensitive period for movement as the age of childhood, "when
movements possess a fascinating interest". The benefits of movement
are many, from the apparent refinement in coordination to the more
subtle development of order, intelligence and morality.

Winter Conferences Sign up now for the winter parent/teacher conferences which are scheduled for Thursday & Friday, February 18th & 19th. Our Child Care Program is available on those days only if you pre-register and if there is room. Don't wait!
Growing Power's Market Basket Wow! We've had tremendous response to the Growing Power Market Baskets! We are so excited to be able to offer this service to our families because we feel it ties in so well to our philosophy of good health, recycling and supporting local businesses. And, as an added bonus, the school makes a small profit ($3-$4) on each purchase. Pass the word on - we welcome orders from family and friends, too.
Box Top Collection Sheets
A winter-themed collection sheet was recently sent home to help you with Big G Box Top collections. Encourage your child to search the house for box tops (see participating products) and tape them on the sheet which is due by Friday, February 19. Box Tops are turned in two times each year by our hard-working coordinator, Kristie Carpenter, and we thank her for making the collection so much fun!
Each winter sheet filled on BOTH sides will earn $2 for RMS. If everyone submits their sheet, we have the chance to earn $280! Of course, the more turned in, the greater the return. If you still have your Halloween collection sheet, turn that in, too. It's never too late! Valentine's Day This year, Valentine's Day falls on a Sunday, so we will celebrate on Friday, February 12. We ask that the children in Primary and Extended Day classes not address their valentines to individual classmates. They should simply bring one signed valentine for each child in the class. This makes the delivery of the valentines much easier. In the Elementary classes, the children may address specific valentines to their classmates.

Parent Observations RMS
parents are always invited and welcome to observe their child's class.
Please call the school office or speak directly with your child's
teacher to schedule a day that is convenient for you.
Our
classrooms have observation guidelines that you will be asked to
follow. (We ask that you observe the students at work, for example,
and refrain from interacting with them.) Your observation feedback is
very interesting for the teachers to have.
If your child will
be moving from Extended Day into Lower Elementary next year, we
encourage you to visit one of our three Lower El classrooms. Contact
the school office to make arrangements for a visit. We know it will be enlightening!

The Common Cold from KidsHealth.Org
Bringing sniffles and sneezes and perhaps a sore throat and annoying cough, the common cold catches all of us from time to time.
With kids getting as many as eight colds per year or more, this contagious viral infection of the upper respiratory tract is the most common infectious disease in the United States and the No. 1 reason kids visit the doctor and stay home from school.
