Racine Montessori School is part of a global community that guides the whole child toward a life-long love of learning. Children develop independence, confidence, moral responsibility, social purpose and inner peace through teacher guidance on self-directed work in a non-competitive atmosphere. Our school strives to offer strong academics and support in a setting of self-respect, respect for others and respect for our environment.

Lakefront Artist Fair
We had a great first meeting on Friday, January 15th and we're off to a great start.  MANY THANKS to our invaluable parent volunteers who are spearheading each of the event's main areas.

Hospitality Booth: Lisa McFarland did such a fantastic job in this area last year and she has promised to do it again!  The function of this area is to distribute coffee and kringle to the artists during the morning hours.  Last year, Lisa was able to get the coffee donated and the kringle at half price!

Children's Booth
: Laura Carpenter devised the greatest activities for the children's Make-and-Take area last year and has offered to unleash her creative juices again this year. Things to save and bring to school:  caps from glass bottles, old calendars with pretty pictures and unpopped bubble wrap!

Basket Raffle: Tanya Larsen  oversees this important area of LAF.  Look for information coming from her soon asking for basket donations!  We are always amazed at the awesome baskets we receive and are always grateful for Tanya's dedication to this area.

Silent Auction: This area showcases artwork from our participating artists.  Samantha Cohen did a terrific job of organizing this area last year and she has graciously offered to do it again!

Prize Board: Melissa Driefuerst  has spearheaded the Prize Board for the past few years and has kindly offered to do it again!  Fantastic!  This year, Cindy Westman has offered to help Melissa and how nice is that!  The Prize Board offers a collection of prizes ranging in value from $5-$25, half for children and half for adult. It's a very popular area where patrons pick a number for only $5 and win a prize!

Publicity: Stacey Kocian is an expert in this arena, and we are thrilled that she has offered to lead and take charge of publicity!

Baked Goods: Julie Zenner offered her help coordinating the baked goods area again after doing such a great job last year!  Julie also will help out in the Hospitality Booth!

Administration: Colleen Wilkinson is our "go-to" person for checking prices and doing all manner of odds and ends for us which is much appreciated.  Colleen and her family have also offered to sponsor our entertainment for the day, musician Paul Imholte from St. Cloud, MN.  THANKS SO MUCH!

Growing Power's Market Basket

Something new and wonderful will be coming to RMS each week, and you are invited to join in!  We are becoming a drop-off site for Growing Power, based in Milwaukee. This historic two-acre farm is the last remaining farm and greenhouse operation in the City of Milwaukee!  You can support small farmers, save money and eat well by purchasing fresh produce from Growing Power's Rainbow Farmers Cooperative.  Deliveries and pick-up will be available weekly.

Order the Regular Market Basket for $20 which is intended to feed 2-4 for a week, a Junior/Senior Basket, which provides the same fruits and vegetables as the Regular Basket, only a smaller quantity for $12, or an Organic Basket filled with all organic fruits and vegetables for $30.

Healthy Hearts

Orders and payment, made to Racine Montessori School, must be received by 9:00 a.m. on Wednesdays and will be delivered to RMS by 11:30 on Fridays of the same week.

To learn more about Growing Power, visit www.growingpower.org or stop by the office for a brochure.  We will begin next week, collecting orders by 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 27th with our first delivery on Friday, January 29th.  Our thanks to Paul Sloth for making it happen and offering to administer the program for RMS!

In the News...
Thank You!
Thank you to RMS parent, Joel Brieske, dad of Eleanor, in Nicole and Mary Kay's classroom, for coming in this past Saturday to do some electrical work for us.  It was a tricky job, requiring considerable time and patience, and we were happy to get the job done, thanks to Joel's expertise!

The Meadow's Soup Lunches!
On Wednesday, January 27th, the Meadow will prepare and serve a soup lunch to those students and staff who are interested in having a nice hot meal.  This is the third soup lunch they have provided, and this time the menu will include homemade vegetable alphabet soup, bread sticks, fruit salad with yogurt and milk, all for $4.

The monthly soup lunch program provides not only the practical experience of planning, preparing and serving a healthy meal, but also gives students financial management experience.  Beginning with last month's meal, The Meadow adopted a "Share-Invest-Save-Spend" program with the profits divided into four areas:
Share: Money is donated to a worthy cause. This
month it will go to UNICEF in support of Haiti
  relief.
Invest: Money is used to purchase kitchen
  and/or lunch serving equipment.
Save: Money is set aside for unforeseen future
  needs.
Spend: Money is used for other classroom needs,
with input from the Class Council.

The new kitchen in the Meadow, not yet fully complete, is going to make a huge difference in food preparation!  It's very exciting!

Note:  Because the need in Haiti is so urgent, we are collecting additional donations for the UNICEF Earthquake Relief Fund in case you are interested in making a donation.

Montessori Spotlight
The goal of a Montessori setting is to facilitate the independent development of the child by providing an environment that stimulates and unleashes the natural drives found in every individual at birth to adapt, learn, grow and reach the fullest potential.  To do this, the environment must provide opportunities and activities that best suit a child's stage of development. The environment must be "prepared" to take advantage of what is already in the child: the internal need for self-formation and self- realization through active and real experiences with the world.

Winter Conferences
Winter parent/teacher conferences are scheduled for Thursday and Friday, February 18th and 19th.  Sign-up sheets are currently available on the table in the main hallway outside the office. Stop by to sign up or give us a call.

Aluminum Cans - Keep 'Em Coming!
Please bring in your cans by the end of January to help twenty-two year old Tyler Zelko, who was involved in a single-vehicle accident in October that has left him in a coma.  Friends of his family have organized an aluminum can collecting fundraiser to raise money for medical costs not covered by insurance.  Please bring your aluminum cans to RMS by the end of January and we will make sure they are donated to this cause.

Did you know...
...the "moveable alphabet", used in our primary classrooms, is a wooden box containing every letter in the alphabet plus punctuation (commas, periods, question marks, exclamation points).  Consonants are blue letters and vowels are red.  Children compose words, then sentences, with the moveable alphabet.
