Racine Montessori School is part of a global community that guides the whole child toward a life-long love of learning. Children develop independence, confidence, moral responsibility, social purpose and inner peace through teacher guidance on self-directed work in a non-competitive atmosphere. Our school strives to offer strong academics and support in a setting of self-respect, respect for others and respect for our environment.

We are seeking donations of the following items/skills and would be most appreciative of any help:

  • Our Child Care Program (CCP) is in need of a large (55 gallon) fish tank, if anyone has one to donate!  Please check with our Child Care Directors Dee Dee Larsen or Lynne Morin for details.
  • Child Care is always grateful for the donation of healthy snacks!  Many children use our before- and after-school care so please consider supporting afternoon snack time.

Montessori Spotlight
Parents often wonder how the Montessori philosophy can be implemented in parenting.  One of Dr. Maria Montessori's renowned quotes is, "Follow the child."  That doesn't mean you hand over your authority to the child!  It does not mean children should have free reign.  Children need the security and structure of consistent, firm and wise adult guidance.  For Montessori teachers, "follow the child" means to accommodate individual learning in the classroom.  For parents and guardians, it simply means to be watchful for the special gifts that a child brings to the world, and to give space, attention and support to nurture those gifts.  That might mean you and your child watch a bug down climb down a hill of dirt for as long as it holds your child's attention, baking cookies or playing a game of chess together.

Children are very capable and eager beings, even very early in life.  Allow them choices (limited, if necessary) in what to wear or what to have for a snack.  Encourage self-sufficiency by designing age-appropriate practice in gardening, cooking, cleaning and repairing activities.  Keep coat hooks, book shelves and craft centers at their level so they can be accessed easily.  As an adult impacting children, exhibit curiosity for all the wonders of the world.  Show constant compassion and respect in all possible ways every day.

In the News...
Martin Luther King Holiday
There will be no school or CCP on Monday, January 18th, as we observe Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's birthday.  We acknowledge Dr. King's great dream for America, and we hope that you will take some time on this day to consider an America where people of all races, religions and creeds can live together and treat each other like brothers and sisters; where there is an end to all hatred, injustice and violence; and where a new spirit of kindness and unity will prevail.

Thank You!
Thanks to Dan Zenner (RMS dad of Maya, a first-level student in the Tree House classroom) for donating a carbon dioxide detector for the school.  Dan recently installed a similar detector at his work and they found out soon that it does, indeed, work.  The detector sounded its alarm, the fire department was called and the building was evacuated because the CO2 level was unsafe.  We certainly appreciate this extra level of safety for our students and staff and we appreciate the thoughtfulness of the Zenner family!

Girl Scout Mitten Drive
A big "Thank You!" for your generous response to the recent Girl Scout Mitten Drive.  One of the recipients, the Bray Center, sent this note:

"Thank you for your help in collecting and donating hats, mittens, scarves and other items for children who might not have the things they need to keep warm (and look cute, too!).  Not only did you help hundreds of children and families, but you did something EXTRA special.  When your troop leaders dropped off the items for us to help distribute, children and families came in to pick out the things they needed.  And guess what!  Several of them decided that they had things at their homes which they no longer needed and went home to get them.  They brought in more stuff (coats and jeans and other things) their children had outgrown.  They asked us to help them find children and families who could use them.  So, families who had little, found that they had enough to share with others.  Your special work to give to others actually helped them to see that they could help others too.  It made them smile and feel like they were doing something special, too.  So, EXTRA thanks to you, for doing even more for the families than helping to keep their children warm. Your giving spread throughout the entire neighborhood, even further than the items you gave."

Winter Conferences
Winter parent/teacher conferences are scheduled for Thursday and Friday, February 18th and 19th.  Sign-up sheets will be available next week on the table in the main hallway outside of the office. Stop by to sign up or give us a call.

United States Census 2010
The United States Census Bureau is issuing a call to action for every resident of our nation:  "Be Counted in 2010."  The 2010 Census is important.  It determines the distribution of more than $300 billion of government funding annually for critical community services, it generates thousands of jobs across the country and it impacts your voice in Congress.

Questionnaires will be delivered or mailed to households in March; many households will receive a replacement questionnaire in early April.  Census workers also will visit households that do not return questionnaires.  The U.S. Constitution requires a national census once every 10 years.  The census is a count of everyone residing in the United States - people of all races and ethnic groups, both citizens and non-citizens.

With only ten questions, the 2010 Census questionnaire is one of the shortest questionnaires in history and should take only about ten minutes to complete.  By law, the Census Bureau cannot share an individual's census questionnaire responses with anyone, including other federal agencies and law enforcement entities.  A complete and accurate count is in our hands!  For more information, go to www.2010census.gov.

Aluminum Cans - Keep 'Em Coming!
There is a bin on the east side of our school for aluminum can collection. Please bring in your cans by the end of January to help twenty-two year old Tyler Zelko, who was involved in a single-vehicle accident in October that has left him in a coma.  Friends of his family have organized an aluminum can collecting fundraiser to raise money for medical costs not covered by insurance.  Please bring your aluminum cans to RMS by the end of January and we will make sure they are donated to this cause.

Label Clothing --  Unclaimed Lost & Found To Be Donated
If your child got new outerwear (jacket, hat, mittens) over the holidays, please be sure to label each article of clothing.  It's amazing how many things, including jackets and snowpants, end up in our Lost and Found bins.

Speaking of Lost and Found, we are filled to over-flowing and will be emptying our Lost and Found bins next week and donating usable items to area shelters at the end of next week.
