Certified PROFIBUS training - MMU, Manchester
There are just 2 places available on the Certified PROFIBUS Installer and Commissioning & Maintenance courses on 8th & 9th September and only one place remaining on the Certified PROFIBUS Training Week commencing 12th September - first come, first served.
Designed to help candidates reach their fullest potential in just a week, the week covers the Certified PROFIBUS Installer course - which is pre-requisite, the Commissioning & Maintenance module, the newly-introduced System Design module (see adjacent feature article) and finally the Certified PROFIBUS Engineer Course.
Each course can be taken individually or as part of the full set, depending on the candidates' existing qualifications and ability.

| PROFIBUS Engineer Refresher
The Certified PROFIBUS Engineer Refresher Module on 7th October is a full one-day course to enable people who have already gained Certified PROFIBUS Engineer status to keep up to date with current developments and obtain a new-style certificate. The course covers latest developments in PROFIBUS, systems/network design and new functions of instruments such as ProfiTrace.

This new free-to-attend one-day seminar addresses the key practical issues arising from the use of digital communications technologies in automated manufacturing and advanced engineering applications. Covering the use of PROFIBUS and PROFINET in application areas across all of industry, it focuses on the practical aspects of maintenance and diagnostics.

Certified OPC Professional Courses 
MMU has teamed up with The OPC Training Institute to host two hands-on OPC workshops featuring the use of PROFINET applications and devices.
The Certified OPC Professional (COP) courses provide Automation professionals with the right skills to properly utilize OPC technology to improve plant efficiency and control. Each course offers practical hands-on experience you can apply immediately. Graduates will know exactly how to setup (or troubleshoot) an OPC connection and make it secure the instant they enter the plant. The courses cover Level 1 and Level 2 and last two days each, from 27 to 29 September.

Certified PROFINET Engineer & Installer Course 
17-19 Oct 2011
This training course provides a detailed technical knowledge of the PROFINET technology and the advantages it offers your automation and production processes. At the end of the training there will be a theory exam. Participants who pass get the title Certified PROFINET Engineer and are awarded an official certificate. Successful participants will have the confidence to evaluate PROFINET as a solution for their automation requirements and be able to design a proper application.

First installation of COMbricks in the UK
 Voith Industrial Services run a wheel and tyre assembly plant at Vauxhall's Ellesmere Port complex. The plant supplies wheel sets for Vauxhall's assembly line on a just-in-time basis. It is highly automated and has a number of PROFIBUS networks involved with plant control and operation.
Previously, device and network failures have caused costly pauses in production. Voith wanted a permanent monitoring system that gave pre-warning of impending failures before they cause a break down in production. They decided on a trail installation of a Procentec COMbricks unit to monitor two PROFIBUS networks and provide two-channel repeater functionality. The installation by Verwer Training & Consultancy has been a great success, providing 24/7 monitoring and pre-warning should network performance deteriorate. Errors are automatically logged and an email issued to give warning of the problem. Greg Fields, plant manager at Voith said "the system enables our engineers to have confidence in the PROFIBUS networks and to react quickly should a fault develop. The cost of the installation should be recouped the very first time that we get a pre-warning of failure. We have decided to install a second COMbricks unit to monitor four additional networks."
