PROFIBUS in the Water Industry

By Robin Lennox, ICA Specialist, South West Water

PROFIBUS is now being widely adopted within the water industry, particularly on larger installations, in order primarily to provide a local network communicating data from measuring instruments and actuated valves on the plant to the controlling PLC.

The selection of PROFIBUS was driven by its greater (and still increasing) availability on equipment manufactured for water applications.

Water companies are now developing ideas for more advanced uses of the facility provided, including remote access to plant and equipment for diagnostic purposes.  The PROFIBUS Group provides the water industry with a point of access to technical expertise, training and to those with knowledge of Profibus product availability.

I could go on at some length, talking about the balance between installation and commissioning cost reductions and the additional equipment that has to be purchased, but I think that's enough to make the point!

PI new logo
PI is the largest automation organization of its type in the world, with a network of regional offices and over 1400 globally-based member companies. PI also has a network of competence centers, training and test organizations that contribute to and support developers, integrators and end users. No other fieldbus organization has a 'community' better able to support the automation market and its end users with solutions designed to help manufacturing enterprises maximize profits.

So why not join us? It's relatively inexpensive and brings many attractive and cost-saving benefits.

Free Seminars - Manchester

There are still a few places available on a first-come, first-served basis at our "Practical Aspects of PROFIBUS & PROFINET" free seminar series returns to Manchester in October.

Certificate of Attendance: While these seminars are free to attend, there is a nominal charge of 15 + VAT if you would like to receive an official Certificate of Attendance.

Practical Aspects of PROFIBUS in Process
is on October 6th

This seminar addresses the key practical issues arising from the use of digital fieldbus communications technologies in process and hybrid industries. Covering the use of PROFIBUS PA in key application areas such as Pulp & Paper, Chemical, Utilities, Pharmaceutical, Oil & Gas today, it focuses on the practical aspects of using PROFIBUS in process industry applications from system design and hazardous area considerations through to maintenance and fault-finding.

while Practical Aspects of PROFIBUS & PROFINET in Factory Automation is on October 5th and concentrates on digital communications technologies in automated manufacturing and advanced engineering applications.

Covering the use of PROFIBUS and PROFINET in key application areas such as packaging, printing, electrical and electronics assembly, robotics, automotive engineering, drives, mechanical handling and logistics, control systems and energy management, it focuses on the practical aspects of using PROFIBUS and PROFINET in factory automation applications from system design and safety considerations through to maintenance and fault-finding. Supported by live demonstrations of actual tools used in configuration and maintenance, the programme will be of great value to Designers, Production Engineers and System Engineers involved in design, operation and maintenance of modern automated factories and machinery.

MMU Logo Upcoming training opportunities

The next opportunity to get PROFIBUS trained and Certified will be at MMU's Certified PROFIBUS Training week from 20-24th September.

Following a new format designed to help candidates reach their fullest potential in just a week, the schedule covers the Certified PROFIBUS Installer course - which is pre-requisite, the Commissioning & Maintenance module and finally the Certified PROFIBUS Engineer Course.

Each course can be taken individually or as part of the full set, depending on the candidates' existing qualifications and ability.

In October there will be the chance to get qualified on PROFINET, when MMU will be presenting the Certified PROFINET Engineer course on the 12th to 14th. Book now to avoid disappointment!

To register for any of these events, please download the Registration Form and return to admin@uk.profibus.com or call Ann on +44 207 193 8018 to check availability.

PROFIBUS Engineer Refresher Course

MMU will be presenting a PROFIBUS Engineer Refresher and Recertification Course taking place in the week of 15th November. The course cover latest developments in PROFIBUS, Systems/Network design and new functions of instruments such as the PROFItrace.

For further details, email or call Ann on +44 207 193 8018.
New! CoDeSys V3 training course

In the automation industry, proprietary programming languages are widely used. But, to protect investment in product and infrastructure, reduce cost in maintenance, and make workforce skills sustainable and transferable, compliance to international or open standards is the key. IEC61131-3 is such an open international standard for automation programming and CoDeSys is a widely used system that fully utilises many functions of IEC61131.

CoDeSys Version 3, released in 2006, has set a new standard in object-oriented programming for automation tasks. The following are some of the highlights compared to the widely-applied Version 2.3:

Programming of complete PLC networks including multiple PLCs or controllers within one single project
Modularisation of the development system in components with separated versions or user defined versions
Visualisation can be easily extended to new client PCs
No longer a development system but an open automation engineering platform suitable for extensions and integration of other solutions

CoDeSys V3 Basic is a 3-day training programme, developed and run by the German company, 3S Smart Software Solutions.  The course will be presented by 3S at MMU 27 to 29th October.

The course is for everyone who wants to know modern PLC programming. No prior knowledge of CoDeSys V2.3 or other PLC programming skills are required.

As an introductory, one-time offer, the course is priced at just 450. Don't miss it!
